Melbourne voted the best city in Australia

MELBOURNE has taken the crown from Sydney in Australian Traveller magazine's 2013 Readers' Choice Awards. It's been voted the country's best city, as well as the best winter holiday destination and the most romantic city.

More than 1100 Aussie travellers were surveyed for the annual awards, which were announced today.

Although Sydney lost its 2012 "best city" status, it did win the best bar category for Opera Bar and best restaurant for Quay

.

"Considering that Melbourne has always been our culinary capital, that's a big shift," Australian Traveller editor Georgia Rickard said.

Another big winner was the Kimberley in remote WA. It was voted the ultimate dream destination, best adventure holiday destination and best cruise experience.

The award for best town went to Daylesford in Victoria, which Rickard said was a surprise given the tradition for travellers to vote for a beachside destination.

"It says a lot about our changing tastes and how much we're interested in food tourism these days," Rickard told guests at the lunch.

The classic Queensland beach holiday was voted as Australia's best overall travel experience.

Hi PH Smiley Happy

I quite like Adelaide too, the city streets are really well set out, nice old buildings , the country areas aren't too far out from the city, but it's a bit too hot and dry over summer for me, so I'll stay where I am lol

Too busy.

Too messy.

Roads were too confusing.

Ive travelled around Australia and, IMO, there are many cities better than Melbourne

Hi Deb, that is the reason why I wont live there now, their summers are not like ours.

As far as Adelaide goes as a city, it is all that you said.Smiley Happy

Melbourne is a fantastic place to live: fantastic nightlife and eateries. Theres always plenty of cultural attractions and family friendly events going on. The only downfall is the unpredictable weather patterns lol

I found Sydney too fast-paced, maniac drivers everywhere, dull and too congested for my liking. Not in a hurry to visit there again.

Well deserved recognition IMO.

Mugssy , I think all the cities have their good and bad points. What I remember most about Perth is that the streets are very clean and it has an excellent bus service lol
