Michelle Bridges Helps Set Sister Hens Free!

FOUR of Australia's most recognisable chicks have been recruited in a bid to get hens out of cages across the country.

The RSPCA's new 'Set a Sister Free' campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the plight of hens caged for egg production, with figures suggesting more than 65 per cent of chickens are housed in tiny cages half the size of this page.

There are roughly 11 million hens around the country crammed into the tiny pens.

"They're really intelligent animals, very inquisitive and when they're in these very small cages they can't flap their wings or move around or perch," RSPCA spokeswoman Elise Meakin said,

"It's a pretty miserable experience."

The Biggest Loser's Michelle Bridges, model Laura Csortan, Channel 10 weathergirl Magdalena Roze and TV vet Katrina Warren have all leant their faces to the campaign and all four have "personal reasons" for getting on board.

"We're so thrilled to have their support, they're really influential women," said Ms Meakin.

"Michelle Bridges is all about health and fitness and clean eating, she always preaches ethical choices."

Yes I love it too.     Good for them.  It's good to get well-known faces behind such campaigns.  Just wondering if Michelle Bridges eats chicken or maybe only free-range.  Though even free range can be suss.

It's not a good time on Earth for chickens is it, Bright? Everyone wants to eat them or their offspring  😞

At least if they're free range their short lives will be happier which will make us humans feel less guilty about it, I suppose.

it gets 4 'chicks' faces in the media too............for free 🙂

A bit of publicity never hurt a 'chick';)

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Not sure how to interpret that, Grizz 🙂

It's a monitor as in a goanna and It's 64 inches and your'e in a cage with some chickens?

She is the only one I have heard of...her steely gaze shoots off the back of every bus around here.

Good cause though.

I buy only free range eggs, have for years now. If I can't get them from a farmer, I go to the local weekend markets.

Now I found one that sells in our Supermarket IGA.

These are true free range eggs. Have been to the farm and saw the chooks roaming free with my own eyes. The eggs taste delicious and the yolks are a golden orange, not like those anaemic looking cheap ones from battery hens. They cost more, but are worth every cent.

Unfortunately Queensland Government has changed the rules about how many chickens can be kept for free range. From 1500 previously to now 10,000 per hectare. It will make the places overcrowded and just as bad as battery hens.

Thank goodness I live in Victoria, and when I go to Quld. my granddaughter has her own chickens for eggs.
