NBN Co's take-up rates soar

Last week was the most recent NBN progress update.

At the time the fact that the take-up rates were increasing rapidly was lost amongst the asbestos fallout.

Our take-up rates have been described as world leading, at recent industry forums.

A week later and I haven't seen it on the news.

This is good. With the advent of smart TVs at home and the growth in online activity in business, health and education we'd be crazy to stop it or change it now.

Malcolm wants to talk down about Mike Quigley but Mr Quigley has earned his position and earned our trust.  Any man who refuses performance bonuses and donates his entire first year salary to NeuroScience Australia deserves Australian of the year in my opinion.

Barnaby Joyce fair dinkum insulted him.  He did a very good Les Patterson impersonation.

Actually I was rather disappointed that there was so much trash politics talk and personal attacks.

At most of these events Quigley and his team get to talk more about the project, issues, what's going on and why. It's interesting and informative.

PLEASE NOTE: I have not mentioned Labor. This is about the National Broadband Network infrastructure project.  It's not a hate fest on LNP or their fans.

Analysis: Big numbers, big growth in just five weeks.

Take-up rates across NBN Co's fibre network are soaring, with many rollout areas adding hundreds of users over the past five weeks.

In a Budget Estimates dominated by asbestos and antagonism, NBN Co provided an updated dataset of completed fibre serving area modules (FSAMs) and the percentage take-up for connections in each.

As with the previous dataset that was released on April 19, iTnews has run the figures to show exactly what the percentage growth means in terms of number of premises.

The latest data shows significant growth of active users in fibre rollout areas from Kingston Beach, George Town and Hobart in Tasmania, to Coffs Harbour in NSW and Gungahlin in the ACT.

Between the April 19 and May 30 iterations of the dataset, NBN Co has seen growth of 4087 active connections in its top 22 FSAMs, a 34 percent increase.

On the link there are tables with the FSAM take-up rate break down.

it suits you and exceeds your previous options.

i didn't consider video streaming.

wonder why the uptake is so little, with the price and downloading size being simular.

maybe people are locked into plans?

does it cost to connect? the cable only runs past your house?

i won't need to know this for years....thats how far off it is in my area

FN, POD has a reasonable grasp of the NBN debate, political and the science, and is allowed to comment what, where, and when he wishes to so do.

From your link FN:
"A lot of numbers again this month from Tasmania, but one that will please NBN Co is the take-up rate in Hobart, where the number of active users more than doubled in the space of five weeks."

Location      Premises        Connection       Total
                                        Rate                Connections
Hobart         2000               22.7%             454

The Census population of Greater Hobart in 2011 was 211,674, living in 94,440 dwellings with an average household size of 2.38.

And currently with:- 454 total connections, GOSH! That must be "pleasing".

Under the current system the NBN Co install a box on every house (homeowners permission requested first, they don't have to have one) at no cost.

People who normally have low internet usuage (only use it  mainly for emails and internet banking) may not see any advantage in changing what they already have.

There are a high % of retired people in my area.. they may not have the same high GB or faster speed needs as a family with teenagers, or an adult who likes to play online games alot.

The NBN plan I had was month to month, no contract. A good way to try without being committed to it for 24 mths. Although a 24mth contract plan would probably be at a lower cost.

The Oppostion's NBN policy only covers getting the fibre to the nodes on the street (they will put big boxes on the street, fridge size), not to the premises/house. The premises owner will have to pay to get it from the node to the house/premises.. not that they give any indication of how much that will cost.

"Take-up rates across NBN Co's fibre network are soaring"
It would be far more meaningful to supply actual overall figures, e.g. going from 1 to 2 is a 50% increase!

I provided the data last week.

No, it doesn't cost to connect, but does cost to use the service in the same way it does now.

The uptake is not so little. It takes time. People take time to make decisions. People don't like to try new things until someone else has tried them first. People are on contracts and wait for RSPs to change them over or for contract to run out so they can change providers.

Our uptake is exceeding expectations and exceeding most of the world experience for take-ups withing the short time frame. The plan forecasts are being exceeded on every level except wireless which is experiencing more problems than expected both with council objections and with vegetation issues.

The first release site of Kiama Downs/Minnamurra contains 2300 homes and offices.

Around 1200 of these are now connected to the NBN with an active Telco plan.

Demographics; Kiama has a high proportion of seniors, families, university graduates and home based businesses/teleworkers.

I should add that that only applies in the rollout stage straight after the NBN goes live in an area. If you don't get a box installed then, but change your mind 1 year later then there are charges to get one.
