New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.

She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!

We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.

Is there anything I can do?

I thought that too. Why bother getting a dog only to banish it to a life of lonelyness?

I hope I never get a neighbour with an outside dog, especially a noisey beagle. I'd probably have to move.

Even worse....people who get dogs only to keep them in cages. I see it way too often. I wish both were illegal.

People who see pets only as toys or as possessions, to be taken out and enjoyed as some sort of object will never understand our point of view.

They think only of themselves, as being an "owner". My dog used to have its own couch in the living room and it could sleep wherever it liked.

And you know what? It slept outside my bedroom door. I would have let it sleep in my room but it snored rather loudly. and I felt a little bit guilty for even this minor exclusion.

Yeah, it really makes me sad to see it.

I'm sure it was happy with that arrangement. Knowing when you wake up you'll be coming through that door and spend time with you, and being able to hear YOU snore, lol.

If I had my way I'd make breeding pets illegal too. At least until every single pet in shelters find a good home.

Just another ugly side to the selfish human race.

I didn't want to say anything because I'm a visitor to this foreign country and I've already learned the hard way that you can't get some people to view pets as anything more than "playthings" with no rights of their own, no matter how hard you try. But I don't get either why someone would force a dog to spend it's life outside 24/7. Especially a puppy that has a natural instinct to want to be with its human companions--inside--where they are. I can't say I think much of the breeder who allowed their dog to be sold to someone who intended to make it a strictly "outside dog".

No offence, Martini, but tsk-tsk.

In my previous post I said it's a "puppy's" natural instinct to want to be with its human companions. Actually, it's the desire of every dog no matter what age it is. I've seen too many dogs fussed over and treated like the cherished companions they're meant to be, only to be thrown outside and ignored once they've grown past their cute and cuddly puppy stage.

Makes me mad! swear.gif

An outside dog would be a wolf, coyote, or dingo. Wild animals are not domesticated. Humans have domesticated animals to be part of their human pack. Dogs are pack animals. That is why I asked if there are other animals outside for the new dog to have for company??? I wouldn't even leave my horse outside without a companion. It's cruel.

Bored are we?

Clearly none of you have ever owned a basset.

As we have already had this discussion ad nauseaum, it beats me why I have to keep repeating my opinion but I will -  my opinion that keeping dogs INSIDE is cruel. A dog should be free to explore and confining them to a sterile house is madness.

For the past 10 days we have been home with her, the back door has been open 24 hours a day. She has been free to come and go as she pleases with the exception of yesterday where we kept her inside pretty much all day because the temperature hit 35 degrees and we wanted to close the back door to keep the heay out. But aside from the first few days, so far she has chosen to spend 80% of her time outside.

Yesterday with the door closed, she spent most of yesterday scratching at the back door to get OUT!

This week we all go back to work so yes SHE WILL SPEND THE DAY(S) OUTSIDE. And she will do what dogs love to do - explore, smell, roll, dig, bark, run, poo, chase, laze.

In the mornings she will come inside (as she is now) and when we all get home from school/work, she will come inside. Then at night she will GO BACK OUTSIDE to sleep.

If you all want to do the most unatural thing in the world and keep your dogs cooped up inside, that's your problem and I feel sorry for your dogs who are missing out on the joys of fresh air and freedom.

And I take it back about her being in this morning - even though she has a choice to come inside this morning (the door is wide open) she is currently right at the end of my back yard rolling around on a mound of lawn clippings lol.

Yeah inside would be so much more fun - NOT!
