No More Holy Grail for Steve Price

Australian rock group Hunters & Collectors have forced radio broadcaster Steve Price to remove their hit song 'Holy Grail' from his show following his controversial comments on ABC’s Q&A.

The band - which has now disbanded - made the decision to refuse use of their Australian Rules anthem after Melbourne writer Van Badham blamed Price for the torrent of abuse she's received since she appeared on Q&A with Price.

During the live debate, audience member Tarang Chawla asked a question about violence towards women, citing Eddie McGuire's contentious comments about The Age newspaper’s reporter Caroline Wilson being held under water.

McGuire made comments on radio about drowning Wilson at the Big Freeze at the G, an event where celebrities plunge into ice to raise money for motor neurone disease.

"I reckon we should start a campaign or a one-person slide next year," he said last weekend.

"Caroline Wilson, I’ll put in the 10 grand straight away, make it 20, and if she stays under, 50."

Price defended McGuire's comments saying his remarks were "taken out of context" and it was just a "bunch of blokes laughing about things they shouldn't have laughed about".

He then told Badham she was "hysterical" by being upset.

The Hunters & Collectors' decision to ban Price using this music has garnered criticism from fans who have expressed their dissatisfaction on the band's Facebook page.

"You don't like Steve Price's comments on a TV panel show and so you ban him from using your music as an intro which he has done for the last 14 years.

So much for freedom of speech in Australia Are you going to refund the royalties you got for the last 14 years?" wrote one user.

Wassup Van Badham? You can dish out your vile and foul-mouthed abuse on social media but can't take it?

she's been copping the same sort of thing as Sonia Kruger

free speech??

I do rather like Hunters and Collectors, always have. John Farham and Jimmy Barnes did similar when those united patriots were using their music at their meetings. So it's not an unusual thing to do if they don't want to be associated with certain people

I'm pretty sure Freddie wouldn't've been be too happy about it david, considering his family were migrants

Mercury's background - his family are Parsees, followers of the Zorastrian religion whose ancestors came from Persia - was never in the forefront as he sang in Queen. There were sometimes whispers in the Asian community that he ignored his heritage.

But to his family it was an essential part of his identity.

The Macquarie Dictionary was quick to reinvent the word misogyny and made it a sort of buzz word for the great unwashed in case they needed some guidance. Will the Macquarie Dictionary remove the unpalatable (apparently) word hysterical to appease the 'offended industry'?

when people in the public eye use well known song/music as 'they're' personal image helpers it has the effect of making it look like the artist performing the song/music is a supporter of the person which obviously its not.

That's a bit of a stretch d4430. Could it also be that the person in the public eye just happens to like the tune or song?

Its not about freedom of speech.

Thats a strawman.

Its an issue of Hunter & Collectors- the owners of the copyright of the song choosing to stop the copyright (and by extension, the song) being used. The owner/s of the copyright have the rights to allow or disallow use of the copyright.

Edited to add: disbanded or not, the copyright is still theirs.
