Investigators are hoping that new information will help solve the mystery of what happened to Madeleine McCann.

The then- three-year-old British girl disappeared six years ago while vacationing with her family in Portugal.

Scotland Yard is planning to release a computerized sketch of a possible person of interest in the case.

Former prosecutor Wendy Murphy joined America’s News Headquarters to discuss the development.

"I’m not buying it. I think this is more PR than anything," Murphy said. "I think this is all related to a civil suit now underway in Portugal."

The McCanns sued the former police chief for defamation because he wrote a tell-all book.

Alisyn pointed out that the McCanns claim the Portuguese police never took the case seriously

You are probably right, I just assumed they arrested the barrister.  In any case, I cannot believe that it has been made public, because it gives the people warning.

Crucially, the Metropolitan Police has now ruled out a sighting of a man once considered a key suspect and previously seen near the McCanns’ apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, 45 minutes earlier.

Jane Tanner, a friend of Kate and Gerry, previously told officers she saw a dark-haired man carrying away a child wearing pink floral pyjamas at 9.15pm on May 3, 2007.

One of the so-called ‘Tapas Seven’, Miss Tanner had been dining with the McCanns in a nearby restaurant when their daughter went missing.

But detectives have now traced the mystery man, an innocent holidaymaker picking up his two-year-old daughter from a night crèche at the same Ocean Club complex.

The revelation has shifted detectives’ focus on to a later sighting at 10pm when an Irish family reported seeing a man walking towards the beach carrying a blonde girl in pyjamas who appeared to be in an uncomfortable position with her head slumped against him.

Martin Smith, who was holidaying with his wife Mary, daughter Aoife and son Peter, said he saw the man 500 yards from the McCanns’ apartment between 9.55pm and 10pm – just minutes before Kate McCann walked into the apartment at around 10pm.

Yesterday DCI Andy Redwood said the sighting was crucial.

‘A new understanding of events on the evening Madeleine disappeared has resulted in a renewed focus of the investigation,’ he said. ‘This could be the man that took Madeleine.’

Madeleine McCann: Key witness accuses Portuguese police of not taking his vital prime suspect evidence seriously

16 Oct 2013 07:59

Retired businessman Martin Smith provided details for an e-fit of the prime suspect after spotting the mystery man close to where Maddie vanished

Mr Smith, a former Unilever executive, made a statement along with his wife Mary, daughter Aoife and son Peter soon after Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007.

He helped compile e-fits a year later – but the images were not released at the time and were only made public for the first time earlier this week.

Speaking from his home in Drogheda, Co Louth, Mr Smith said that the Portuguese police did not seem to think his sighting was significant.

He added: “It looked as if they put 90% credence on the Jane Tanner sighting, maybe that wrong-footed them and they didn’t take our sighting as seriously. I was surprised it took six years to rule out the other sighting.”

He said he has met with Scotland Yard detectives twice over the past 18 months to help them with the new probe. He added: “We‘d all love to see the police get to the bottom of what happened.”

“We think about Madeleine a lot and we would love to see a conclusion to this case.

Mr Smith was with his wife, daughter, son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren on the night that the three year old vanished.

The family described the man they saw as white, with short brown hair and of average build and height, aged between 20 and 40.

Commenting on the Crimewatch documentary which was broadcast on Monday night he added: “The only new thing in the investigation is the elimination of Jane Tanner’s sighting.

Apart from that from our point of view everything else remains the same in relation to what we said to the police and the media at the time. We have nothing more to add.”

At least two callers who responded to the TV appeal gave the same name for the two e-fits provided by the Smiths.

If they are focusing on Martin Smith's sighting and his point of view hasn't changed he still is quite sure that the man they sighted carrying a child was Gerry .

What does that mean? Where did Martin Smith & family claim the man they saw carrying a child, was Gerry (Madeleine's father)??

This sighting was close to 10pm.

It could NOT have been Gerry if it was 10pm, now could it? I am sure his wife would have noticed him not being there, as would the other dinner companions.

It won't be me........ I have no idea who took her but I am 90% that the parents didn't do anything except leave their children unsupervised and at risk.

I normally don't like discussing these things in this case it is different.Gerry told The Leveson Inquiry words to the effect

that he believes in free speech and hasn't a problem with theories.

The McCann's have also made a bit of money taking those who have theories which are different to what they are telling us to Court.

Now it seems..thanks to the man coming forward with the pj's his daughter wore when .the sighting of the supposed child snatcher was seen by one of their friends. That rules out once and for all .that earlier sighting at an earlier time is not where attention should be .

the focus is on the later sighting (The Smiths sighting of a man and child he later believed ( 60-80%) to be Gerry .This at around 10pm when the alarm was apparently raised by Kate.Different time in focus now and a time when I would normally expect people to be rushing around looking for a missing child .

Kate McCann is now reported as possibly coming very close to the abductor (sp?).

The Police are saying that this changes the previously  'accepted' version of event/times/locations of people ect and that they are taking things back to zero .

I don't know that it changes events as they were ...it does now allow the focus to be were it should perhaps be by ruling out Jane Tanner's (friend) earlier sighting.

If this isn't a con ...their behaviour and money grabbing ,denial and legally wanting to discredit that sniffer dogs could have got it right and that there may be a possibilty that their dd was murdered in the room (though they found the scent of death on clothes and a toy of the childs) ,makes it seem that way to some. They want people's attention to help their daughter...they have got it.

It is my understanding that any money that is raised by the McCanns is used to fund the search for their child. They are not wealthy, how else would they fund it? I can't imagine that everything they have needed to pay for would be within the grasp of ordinary people.

I have not seen  that..... any links?

I am sure they would not be compensated monetarily for that?
