The Belarusian activist Witold Ashurok died in a high-security penal colony, the independent “Nasha Niva” reported. Relatives were informed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
Witold Aszurok died on Friday. Relatives of the activist told journalists that they had not received any news from him in the past two weeks. They were also informed that the cause of the man’s death was cardiac arrest.

Ashurok was arrested for the first time on August 9 last year, on the day of the presidential election, in which, according to official results, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, who was seeking his fifth re-election, won. He was detained a second time a month later. The reason was his participation in the protests in Lida in August and September. In January he was sentenced by a court in Lida to five years in a penal colony for violating public order and using violence against the militia. The independent Belarusian media then reported that it was a very severe punishment for a participant in the post-election protests.
Those who knew Ashurok told reporters that he was “down-to-earth, sincere and had a strong sense of justice.”
