A Victorian man has had his personalised registration plates on his car cancelled after VicRoads deemed them offensive.
Peter Hansen from Portland has had the plates on his Torana for ten years without a problem, but they were suddenly recalled because they “reference violence”.
The plates spell out the word ‘weapon’ in four letters: ‘WEPN’.
The Torana has been a feature at dozens of legal drag races and is known among car lovers.
“I’ve been pulled over by the police to check out my vehicle and they’ve told me how nice of a car I’ve got, but there are never any hoon fines,” he said.
I didn't even know what WEPN meant thinking it was an acronym for something.
He seems to have a great car which he takes pride in and so he should.
I think this is just absurd.

There are many personalised plates here in the NT bacause they are not very expensive. Some are funny, some are clever, some are incomprehensible unless you know the car owner😳🤣
One of my favourites is a little sports car with the plate ROLASK8
AEIOU was a mystery until I found out the owner's surname was Vowels.
And even the NT police have interesting plates. WATCHNU, MYISONU, PATROLN and INDIC8 are some of the ones I've seen.
I have heard that both FIGJAM and DILIGAF have been tried for many times but turned down😆

(I've told this story before) Or, as the students at a catholic girls school convinced the administration when choosing the printing on their Year 12 sweaters: Faith in God, Jesus and Mary 😇
They got away with it too

If one's car is a write off in a wreck, they may need a plate that says FUBAR
(F worded up beyond all repair)

I think they are clever (that the car owners got away with it).
WEPN seems rather tame to me.
I do not find it offensive, however I found it rather disturbing that car can be considered to be a "weapon". It is the owner's attitude to driving that is highly qestionable.
