That's a good question, she-ele.

The Australian Imam Mostafa Rashid is strictly correct in that nowhere in the Quran is the instruction that women should either wear an hijab or cover their face; the instruction is to dress modestly, ". . (and) draw their KHIMAR over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands. . . . '' Quran 24:30-31

(it's worth reading those verses in their entirety, though.)

Here is an interesting article and further opinion on this subject:

SPLITTING HAIR TO COVER HAIR
The Issue of the Hijab

Dolly Z. Hassan PhD, Esq.

(a selected phrase from the article reads:)

"The word "Hijab" derives from hajaba, that is, to hide or conceal, screen, shield. Hijab/hibaja is mentioned eight times in the Quran. But Hijab does not appear in the context of a woman's head covering. Certainly, there is no detailed direction as to women's precise attire."

addit:

Many Muslim women who wear rhe hijab, etc claim to do so out of a sense of religious piety. Even though there is no Quranic basis for hijab, some sects of Islam do teach that the wearing of it is obligatory for Muslim women and in some Islamic countries, women who defy this teaching face legal penalties.

I wonder just how many hijab-wearing women do so more out of desire to express a political sentiment rather than religious one. (odds on though it's going to difficult to find anyone willing to admit to that)

(and that smiley face above is an artifact of sloppy punctuation on my part) 😉

I don't need newspapers, articles from some special group or TV shows to know why most people are against muslim imigrants.

Muslims do not assimilate with non muslims. They will never be close friends, come into your house or invite you to their homes. Their children will never be friends with your children and run in and out of your home like other friends do. This separation creates suspicion and fear. Not being able to get to now someone because they keep an obvious distance, is a problem.

Thy will be friendly and curteous at work or any other public place, but you will never get to know anything about their real personality. I don't care what the women wear or why. I like to know my neighbours and be on friendly terms with them.

I have a lovely japanese friend. She will visit and I can go to her home. The only differnce is that I have to take my shoes off before entering her home. I know all about her life, she knows all about mine. Our visits are full of fun and relaxed.

I also have a muslim friend, but she was raised catholic and converted when she married her Saudi Arabian man, whom she met at University in America. We correspond by letter and send each other small gifts. Since the trouble with the terrorists started, our mail is being opened by customs. My friend taught me a lot about Islam and the requirements as a wife. She has been married for over 30 years and the only things she misses is to be able to drive a car and to come and visit with me.

Am I racist? If people don't want to assimilate and be part of the community, then yes, I am.

I am proud to be Australian and have left my past behind the big ocean. I came here for a better and peaceful life and wanted to belong, not only take the benefits Australia could provide.

So now go and shoot me.

Erica

Muslim/Islam is a religion, not a race, so no you're not being racist. You can't be racist against a religion and it annoys the heck out of me when someone calls you a racist because you mention an aspect of Islam (or any other religion) that you don't like or don't agree with. The word racism has turned into a buzz word. Most people don't even know the true meaning of the word. So many will call you a racist simply because you have a different opinion to someone of a different race.

The true meaning of racisim is you feel your race is superior to another. If you feel that all Indians are scum, the lowest life form and feel your race is much superior, then yes, you are racist towards Indians. You are not racist because you disagree with someone. I have been accused of being racist towards work colleagues because we disagreed on something. There was no stoush, no raised voices, nothing like that. I said blue was blue, she said blue was pink. We worked it out and went and ate lunch together.

I have also been accused of being racist because I said the word black in front of a black colleague. It was in reference to a pair of shoes. Accoring to half the numbskulls I work with, merely saying the word black, regardless of the context, is racist. Yet, there was no issue with her saying the word white when she was talking about a scarf. I was also called a filthy racist because I asked my colleague how she knows if she is sunburnt. It was a genuine question. I nearly got shot down by everyone, except her. The answer was that her skin hurts. I asked her if she found the question offensive and she said no, not at all, but she found the behaviour of everyone getting offended on her behalf offensive. She knows me well enough to know that if I do ask a question like that, it's because I want to know the answer, not because I am mocking her or being horrible.

If people want to accuse me of being a racist, then make sure that I am in fact being racist, not one of the other many reasons that people think are racist, when they're not.

I wish I could kudo you twice tippy.

At last, a sensible comment about racism.

You're right. The words black/white/Asian/European/muslim/christian etc are not racist words at all, merely descriptive.

It is how they are used in context that can make them offensive. But saying someone is black or white or that there can be differences between categories of people is not racist. eg some diseases are more prevalent in certain groups than others, some blood groups are more common in some areas than others. It's just information, nothing more, unless it is used for villification.

Personally, I find it difficult to get my head around racism. To me it is when we make a generalised negative comment about a race e.g. all white Australians are bad. However, it has been pointed out to me that stating all white Australians are good would still be racist. I think the problem is when we make a generalised statement when clearly the statement cannot apply to every person of that race. But then the issue of intent becomes important. I think there is a difference between a person who wants to say a bad thing about a group of people to influence others and a person who is being flippant, and who has no agenda. I realise the latter may be accused of being irresponsible, but hey, life isn't meant to be all serious. Or is it that political correctness has gone nuts and too many people are afraid of saying the wrong thing, irrespective of intent?

but thats the whole point

nobody is forced to be a muslims friend, or invite them to dinner. or do anything with them.

just not think because they are different we must fear them.

yep, the odd one might well be a terrorist, absolutly.

but how many white australians go out and get drunk, then kill someone by various means.

drink driving, king hit, ect

then there are the druggies who break into your house and if you happen to get in the way you prolly will end up in hospital if not dead.

we are being told to fear muslims when in reality we ought to be fearing everyone, cept me cos i'm noice.

The PC crowd wouldn't last 5 minutes in my workplace. The slinging is rife.........but it's in fun and that's the difference. The Asians regularly get called the name of someone else, regardless of gender because "all you Asians look the same so we can't tell which one you are". A few of them are short so we'll often say "sorry, let me get that down for you, we should have put it at Asian height so you could reach it".

One colleague with Italian born parents is known as LFW (little fat wog). I often tell her that her butt is getting fatter. One of the Indians is known as Curry Muncher (and is an awesome cook!). Us white people are known as good for nothing white trash. Of course not everyone participates on the hijinx and are not referred to any of the names above. We keep the hijinx to a minimum when we're around them out of respect for them. We know when to behave.

As for prevelant medical issues, black Africans are more likely to have bowel issues requiring surgery because their large bowel is a little longer and tends to be more floppy, which can result in twisting or folding onto itself. Mediterranian people have a higher incidence of Haemochromatosis (too much iron in the blood, treated by regular blood donations). Japanese people are more likely to get stomach cancer than other races due to the amount of raw fish they eat. White people have the highest rate of neuromas, ganglions and Dupuytren's contractures in their hands.

Australians in cooler climates are more likely to get melanomas. That is due to not getting the heat trigger to put sunscreen on. If you go outside and it's hot, like over 30C, you are triggered to put sunscreen on. If it's regularly low to mid 20's in Summer, you don't get that heat trigger. Nothing racist about any of it, it's medical fact. Of course any race can get any of those conditions, but the incidences are higher in certain races. It's the genetic make up.

I've spoken to my foreign colleagues about different things over the years, the ones with black or brown skin and they all said the same thing. What riles them up the most is being referred to as dark skinned, of colour, non white, or any of the other buzz phrases being bandied around. They are black or brown and want to be referred to as such, same as they refer to us as white. They also hate it when people get uncomfortable using the word black in any context, like the word is taboo or "racist", as in my example above about the black shoes, **bleep** footing around trying to find an alternative word so as "not to offend". If a pair of shoes is black, then call them that.

Political correctness is out of control and needs to be stopped. It's like a virus spreading its filth. It's got to the point these days where people are too scared to open their mouth for fear of offending someone.

Political correctness is. basically, good manners. You don't say or do things that you know will hurt others.

something that is acepted  as a bit of  friendly joshing between colleagues in a work place might well be considered offensive if said to or about strangers on a bus for example.
