THERE are signs people smugglers may be switching from people to drugs after two Iranian nationals were arrested in the people-smuggling heartland of West Java with 60kg of crystal methamphetamine.
Badan Narkotika Nasional or BNN, the national narcotics agency, arrested the men known as Said and Mustopa over the 75 billion rupiah haul, or $7.2 million, that was found buried in coastal woods.
The drugs were located south of the port of Pelabuhan Ratu, in a nature reserve near where the first lifeboat that Australia sent back in January came ashore.
The area has long been one of the major departure points for asylum seekers, though the smugglers are becoming more desperate as the boats are stopped.

Police told Indonesian media the drugs were destined both for local markets Jakarta and Bandung, but also possibly Australia and New Zealand, where methamphetamine was worth four times more than Indonesia.
“The price in Australia could quadruple, in New Zealand can be five times as much,” the BNN’s Deddy Fauzi El Hakim was reported as saying. “So it is a lucrative market.”
