Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Why is anyone allowed to turn the black box off? There is no reason ever why anyone should have the access and capability to do that.

I don't think it is possible to 'turn off' the black box, but in order to access the information on it you first have to find it.

The press conference I just saw, they said they turned it off 12 minutes before contact was lost.

Icy

The plane will sink regardless of how it hits the water so yes it could be on the bottom in one piece.

I am very dubious about the plane even if it hit the water vertical on it's nose at full thrust  having

enough impact when it got to the bottom to register seismic recordings.

No they didn't turn off the blackbox Nev, they turned off the ACARS and the Transponder, they are seperate systems to the Blackbox which is the inflight recorder.  To my knowledge and monman can correct this there is no way to turn it off unless you have it physically in your hands and where they're located in the aircraft it's not easy to get to.

The two systems turned off can be done manually from the cockpit from my understanding.

Thank you, was confused about that the other day.

So, the pilot has to be of concern here?

As I understand it he black boxes - the flight data recrder and the cockpit voice recrder - don't transmit information they simply record it and, as Monman said they are not locted in the cockpit, but somewhere in the tail section of the plane.

Hijack = illegally seize (an aircraft, ship, or vehicle) while in transit and force it to go to a different destination or use it for one's own purposes.

Whether it was an AM pilot or others who commandeered/steered the Aircraft for mine if a planes pilot turns off the flight

record data,  goes in the opposite direction of where it was supposed to go,flies at a height to evade radar detection and

subsequently disappears then it was hijacked whether the owner of the airline wants to use "that' word or not is superflous.

I think that they are dodging to use "that" word as it may cause some hysteria especially with the unusual circumstances...

but if it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck..then I am going to call it Daffy..

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

G S E is right they can not turn the so call"black bix" off it is just a recorder.

What they turned off was sat com devices but now they have worked out the engine reporting

system only stops it from sending engine report data but the transmitter continues to send a

timed connection response.

The sat com was turned off before the narmal RF  and the emergency RF.

That is my understanding of it as well she ele, it's purpose is to record inflight activity including and also the communications between the pilots.

Yes, but perhaps it's more a hostage situation, demands have been made and one of them very well may be tell the media nothing, which would explain why nothing has been said, until now. So what changed?
