Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.
The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.
The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.
The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.
In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.
"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."
The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.
The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

This article makes a lot more sense to me. I have always felt the truth would turn out to be something like this.
on 19-03-2014 02:19 PM
TGSE, apart from an explosion, I can not imagine an inflight fire that would be so quick as to preclude utilising emergency communications available on a large modern passenger aircraft., or even a large transport aircraft , which I have flown.
"Goodfellow may have no doubts about his theory, but other aviation experts do. Greg Feith, a former crash investigator with America’s National Transportation Safety Board said that a fire would have given the pilots time to communicate.
“I’ve seen those remarks. I’ve seen the articles. If there was an electrical fire on board, there still has to be a source,” Mr Feith said. “And you can’t take out the entire electrical system all in one fell swoop without really catastrophically compromising the structure of the aeroplane.."
I agree.
"There is another angle which i think might be a possibility that the MH370 switched codes."
When a passenger aircraft is certified it would be assigned the equivalent of a car VIN:
"Mode S equipment on aircraft are assigned a unique ICAO 24-bit address or (informally) Mode-S "hex code" upon national registration and this address becomes a part of the aircraft's Certificate of Registration."
So that conspiracy belongs up there with chemtrailing (why would it be organised anyway?)
I find it hard to bother very much when the scenerio imagined up by the pilot, that does includes a lot of standard emergency operational procedures when it includes these:
"A loaded Boeing 777 departs at midnight from Kuala Lampur, headed to Beijing. A hot night. A heavy aircraft." Really?
It was a 6 hour flight (the 77-200ER has a maximum endurance of around 15 hours), it had a passenger loading of around 65%, and temperature for take off was approximately 25°C. Not hot, and the aircraft would be well under its Max AUW (all up weight)
"As for the reports of altitude fluctuations, given that this was not transponder-generated data but primary radar at maybe 200 miles, the azimuth readings can be affected by a lot of atmospherics and I would not have high confidence in this being totally reliable." The term should be elevation readings.
Comments about the DC8 landing gear fire overlook that it occurred because the wheel rim contacted the runway (sparks),
that it was noticed/reported just after take-off, and the aircraft crashed within 15 miles of the airport.
However having done so himself, the pilot then says: "There is no point speculating further until more evidence surfaces"
Good advice for all to follow P007. Especially those with no aviation knowledge as well.

Update:
Australian bases could be withholding MH370 data
Information about the missing MH370 flight gathered from US spy satellites at a military base in Australia is being withheld from the Malaysian government, according to reports.
The over-the-horizon radar is capable of tracking flights as far away as 3000km from Pine Gap, enough to track the aircraft as it flew across the South China Sea.
But the Australian Defence Department said it would not be providing comment on the surveillance system when quizzed by US cable news channel Bloomberg.

Could be, maybe...

What silly nonsense, but please tell me why would they withhold information?
"The over-the-horizon radar is capable of tracking flights as far away as 3000km from Pine Gap, enough to track the aircraft as it flew across the South China Sea."
IF, the Jindalee OTH radar range at the very best of times (3000km) does not cover as far north as the South China Sea. 1000–3000km range, the 1000 km being when the ionosphere is at its weakest/ thinnest/lowest: nighttime.
Oh gosh the aircraft vanished during the night (when solar (UV) radiation was not present to stimulate the ionosphere)!
RAAF information apropos JORN:
The state of the ionosphere depends on the level of solar activity.
ionospheric variations throughout the day/night. are one of the factors that determines the quality of ionosphere support for OTHR operations.
JORN does not operate on a 24 hour basis except during military contingencies.
IF, I am used to P007 posting codswallop through a lack of aeronautical/scientific knowledge, but repeating nonsense from a frustrated and uninformed media without applying any basic research achieves exactly what?

You keep barging in bashing others with your alleged first hand knowledge of EVERYTHING related to planes.
I have first hand knowlege of aircraft (NOT radar), and I know for a fact that I knew more about how things function on a plane that any pilot. Just ask a pilot what an incremental beep trim switch is...none will know!
Your knowlege counts for nothing especially considering you scoffed at my theory (and others) that the pilots took it (every small bit of info trickling out confirms this).
MM said....
I have a background that allows me....bla bla bla
P007 your knowledge of aviation technology is similar to that of your appreciation of science......bla bla...
Yet more C&P with no technical appreciation.... No one needs "technical appreciation" to hypothesize....everyones guess, same as yours.
I am aware of masers....of course you are.
I know you C&P Wiki stuff without appreciating the content P007....I could give the appearance of first hand knowlege as you using Wiki and Google....if so inclined.
as anyone with small amount of scientific knowledge would know.....you're SOOO smart!
Actually TGSE it has been hijacked to add to the evil chemtrailers fleet, and the passengers used as forced labour in loading the evil chemicals......Not chemtrailers, but pretty close to what looks to be the truth, but go ahead and scoff away!
As part of my jet training...what?! were you required to dissassemble an aircraft....get your hands dirty...no! Pilots don't touch tools.
It is just a pity that a basically uninformed media are.....Are what? Maybe they should consult with you before putting it to print.
If you understood anything about the equipment in question you would know....pfft, big deal!
Having a good knowledge of, and experience operating, ATC radar systems military and civilian,....you're absolutely AMAZING!
But wait, if you are evil and wish to disappear a plane, why do it so the nuts will notice, just like chemtrailing in broad daylight with high flying evil aircraft above one's head....Yeah, except it looks more and more like it's exactly what happened....but gowan!
And there's more! But I'll leave off with this one....
""Yeah....I don't think so. I'll stick to studying things related to my field"
I agree, and which field are you in?
"I don't "think" anything, just posting a link....."
We have another point upon which we agree""
Yep, no thought at all....a little deductive reasoning and common sense looks like I was on the money (post 57 I THINK!)
And you were wrong. And with my first hand experience with planes, deductive reasoning, and common sense I will take any future debates from you with a grain of salt.
**************************************************************************************************************************
As far as why someone who has been tracking the plane didn't say anything....protecting capabilities is a national security issue of every country, plus maybe they feel it's more important to discover who or what country is behind this (if there actual is one). That info MIGHT...might just save millions of lives.

.....Oh well then. We must not upset 'them'.....geez, afterall, what's a plane full of passengers and crew worth/compared to the importance of supposed 'National Security'.
Notice how the most speculative stories have come from US based sources?.....Reuters, CNN etc.
Nope, the truth about this is being covertly covered up by 'them'.
