Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.
The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.
The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.
The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.
In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.
"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."
The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.
The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Plane security needs to be beefed up more. I reckon all planes should have hidden GPS, live CCTV back to HQ. at least 2 armed air-marshalls on all flights and a fortified power source totally separate from the one pilots can turn on and off. Will make it more expensive to fly but so be it.

why?

UFO your appreciation of aircraft engineering would mirror that of P007. "fortified power source totally separate from the one pilots can turn on and off." ??????
There are several power sources in a multi-engined aircraft UFO, all of which can be quickly taken off line during operations for very good reason, electrical fire in the air, or on the ground.
On a different tack UFO, apropos Martian atmosphere and a past post of yours which caused me think and then ask:
Exactly what does amide hydrolysis under acidic conditions have to do with the characteristics of the Martian atmosphere ?

I've thought the same for some time. Maybe not exactly the same scenario but something very similar. It's the only explanation that really makes sense. If it was a bomb on board it would have gone off somewhere on the planned flight path between Kuala Lumpur and Beinjing. If it was a successful hijacking someone would have claimed responsibility, if it was ahijacking that went wrong, a suicide mission like 9/11 or even pilot suicide, why fly the plane out into the middle of nowhere before crashing it?
The only other plausible explanation I can think of is that it was hijacked by persons wirth limited flying experience, the crew were ordered to turn off communications and change course, there was later a struggle in the cockpit in which the crew were killed and the plane simply continued on the new course until it ran out of fuel.

she ele I agree, I just dont think they should blame any one till they know the facts.

Can you imagine the chaos it would cause in air traffic control if all these planes were simultaneously transmitting live cctv 'back to base.'

Update:
HOW DO WE REALLY KNOW THEY DIED? To hope or let go
HOW can they be so sure everyone is dead?
After nearly three weeks of wishy-washy statements from authorities, the families of MH370 passengers were startled out of their agony by an unusually blunt text message from Malaysia Airlines. The plane is in the ocean and all your relatives are gone.
Many couldn’t accept it. And why would they? No bodies have been found. There hasn’t been any confirmed wreckage.
While aviation expert Neil Hansford is sure authorities “haven’t told us everything” -- he believes the announcement was based on all the evidence available.
“The reality is that all of the available evidence suggests the poor devils are lost and the aircraft is lost,” Mr Hansford told news.com.au.
That takes into account all satellite data released by Australia, France and China as well as the engine data breakthrough overnight.
He continued: “While we all hold out dreams for what happened... this at least gives them (the families) some closure - if they choose to take the closure.”
The decision also allows for the progress of insurance payouts, Mr Hansford said, which cannot occur while the families are in limbo, even though the full story may not be known for several years.
But still, how can Malaysian authorities say “beyond reasonable doubt” there were no survivors?
Until an independent source has verified the bits of wreckage to be definitely from the MH370 I'll continue to have my doubts. All too convenient to declare this area the site where the plane was wrecked when it's too deep and too remote to be properly searched.

More debris has been seen according to the most recent news reports.

....so much debris has been spotted in the last week or more tis just 'plane' ridiculous.......where are all these ships that have been sent in - why aren't we seeing pics of these many ships picking up all these veritable fields of plane debris ?
.....monman would have a fit if he heard some of the 'conspiracy theories' being thrown around behind closed doors at the Chinese Embassy in Perth!! They are only allowing Chinese media in-no western media.
Will give you a sample monnie from one of my sources ( do not ask me to divulge my source as it could be a serious matter regards breaching Bunburian Security!).....apparently one of the theories is that the pilot/s had packed and used parachutes......!!
and you thought I was bad

Go away P007

You may have doubts IF, but based upon what?. Given the information from the satellite hourly handshake signals (pings) which indicate a southerly Indian Ocean track, and knowing the 777's fuel state, it is beyond question that 370 ran out of fuel and then crashed in the Indian Ocean..
"But still, how can Malaysian authorities say “beyond reasonable doubt” there were no survivors?
Because under the circumstances, allowing for any possibilities, and the time that has passed, there will now be no survivors.
I do hope that after this tragic incident there will be consideration and action given to the design, fitting, activation and operation of (radio above surface beacons) ELTs and USBs underwater acoustic beacons.
Civil aircraft 37.5 Khz, range 3 Km
Many miltary aircraft 37.5 Khz and 9.6 Khz, range 10 Km
Proposed military 4Khz, range 25 Km.
It is sobering to rember that the French air accident investigators , after AF447 crashed in the Atlantic, recommended that at least additional USBs should be carried that operated at lower audio frequencies. They are still not!
More sobering information:
Airbus Operations Hamburg March 5-6, 2014 Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) Working Group
"The scope of this activity is limited to defining installation and maintenance
provisions for a Low Frequency Underwater Locator Beacon (LF-ULB) capable
of operating at 8.8 kHz and complying with SAE Documents "
And finally from ICAO Amendment 36 to Annex 6 to the Chicago Convention 6.5.3 All aeroplanes on long-range over-water flights:
"at the earliest practicable date but not later than 1 January 2018, on all aeroplanes of a maximum certificated take-off mass of over 27 000 kg, a securely attached underwater locating device operating at a frequency of 8.8 kHz.
Good heavens, in the meantime there are low frequency beacons available that I could fit to a FDR in a few hours with the use of a fully equipped engineering workshop.
