Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?
Today children are exposed to things that 20 years ago were unheard of. As time creeps on we see more and more things that challenge belief. In film and on television, extremely violent imagery is such an accepted and major part of entertainment that some cannot enjoy a film or program unless it is violent.
In what passes for music, the lyrics are more explicit and sexually laden than they ever were. A great deal of the video clips that appear on television would be considered pornography once upon a time. Other forms of music such as some rap have lyrics about killing people, guns and putting down women in the worst possible way.
Something that would be laughed off as impossible years ago, children before they can even walk properly are now exposed to adult entertainers such as drag queens as part of some supposed education or enlightenment program. Some of these drag queens have names of male and female genitalia. Some have names that relate to sexual scents and arousal. Some even have gone as far as doing stripping routines, twerking, teaching twerking, and other blatant sexually suggestive behaviour. They are even reading childrens stories that are an alternative to the male and female relationships or the birth genders..
Children are playing violent video games which are much more graphic and interactive than what they were in the past. Many are not interested in a video game unless it is violent. They can play for hours and hours on these games, either connected to their own source or a source that is online. Some of the games are so violent that some adults are sickened to the degree that they refuse to even talk about it. Others that do find it almost impossible to comprehend.
* Where should the boundaries be set or where should they have been set?
* What effect is this having on children today?
* How will things be in ten or twenty years time?

So what are your thoughts about the violent content in so-called music today twyngwyn? Does it alarm you?
What is your view on a shop keeper who peddles / sells CDs that are violent and gang-related to young folk?
4channel, ANYTHING violent alarms me....but....there is nothing new under the sun

As you pointed out in #110, song lyrics, in any era, are the product of and a reflection on the social conditions and injustices prevailing in that era. I would suggest that gangster rap music is a direct result of social injustices pertaining (particularly in America) to a large, underprivileged section of the community. So maybe our concern should be more about finding ways to alleviate those injustices rather than trying to silence those articulating their frustrations.

I'd say that gangsta genre is a result of powerful Caucasian men exploiting for profit. $$$$$$$
I disagree with the "narrative thing" or "telling it like it is" thing.
I won't mention the name of this particular rap icon. He was an aspiring actor and dancer. He was also quite effeminate in his ways. He later became a macho rapper with an aggressive image and one of a womanizer. I have seen 3 clips about him on YouTube. They were by African American men giving their opinion and analysis of him. One said that he was a homosexual. The other said ... "At the very least bisexual". Looking at early film of this so called icon, I can easily see where the independent youtube cllip / film makers were coming from. There are other examples where African American males with no gang affiliations are given a script and at the end of the day they collect their pay. $$$$$$
This "Telling like it is" thing is just an excuse, a cop out to allow this violent genre to continue.
There are good rappers around that rap about injustices without having thug and gang promotion, misogynist and violent filth spewed from their mouth. Sadly the music business is less moral than the crooked car salesman. The good rappers aren't being promoted.

Perhaps a little less interest in all this ' awfulness ' could be shown by some adult.
Clicking on all this rubbish is promoting said rubbish.
It ain't the kids who are a ' worry '.

How is his sexuality in any way relevant? Are you suggesting there is something fundamentally immoral about being anything other than heterosexual. Or do you believe it is this man's sexuality that makes him 'undesirable'?

I'm not suggesting anything of the sort. The only relevance his sexuality has in all of this is that his whole later persona was manufactured to fit the genre. The sexuality thing is to show what he was like in comparison. As I said, he was an aspiring actor and dancer. Modern dance I believe. He was by observation effeminate in his ways. The later projected macho womanising thug image for the gangsta genre was totally different from the almost "sweet" innocent kid that was captured on film years earlier.
The power to create illusion is in film and media. It should never be underestimated!

So presumably, for any actor who is really a 'sweet, innocent kid' the lead role in Othello, Macbeth or (heaven forbid) Titus Andronicus would be an absolute no-no.
