Protein drinks can play an important role in a seriously ill (cancer) persons diet or to supplement a less than well persons diet even.
As a meal replacement for a dieter, it is just dumb and it won't work long term anyway.

Sustagen is a protein drink that helps with diet during recovery. I was addicted to it when I was pregnant.

Protein drinks are a good source of protein. Protein supplements are not generally required unless a person's diet is otherwise lacking in protein (as can happen with vegetarians) or you are a hard core athlete trying to build or maintain muscle mass.
I have used protein drinks myself when I used to exercise a lot but I don't think it is necessary for people who have a normal diet and only exercise moderately.

My nephew has a protein drink every single day, to build himself up.
He doesnt need to diet as he is skinny as a rake, he is not sick or anything, just naturally thin.
