Q&A

Seeking to understand the inexplicable

February 24, 2012

Each year, an average of 27 Australian children die at the hands of their parents.

http://www.smh.com.au/national/seeking-to-understand-the-inexplicable-20120224-1trvd.html

(I don't think that that figure of 27 includes the non-accidental deaths in which the COD is "undetermined", or sometimes SIDS.   I know from experience that there are a number of these due to child abuse, but not proven as such so the COD is not stated as such)

Another one in Queensland yesterday, I think.  Alleged double homicide/suicide.  Pregnant woman and her 7 yo son, and a man.

How do you know it's a case of DV?

Donโ€™t:

Get personal. Direct attacks on your opponentโ€™s lifestyle, integrity or honesty should be avoided. Attack the issue not the person.

Q&A

I thought Miriam Margolyes hit the nail on the head when she responded to question about ant-semitism.

'Earlier, Ms Margolyes, who is Jewish, answered a question about the rise of anti-Semitism by saying: โ€œPeople donโ€™t like Jews ... itโ€™s not comfortable to say that but I believe it to be true.โ€

She went on to suggest that Israelโ€™s actions and โ€œappallingโ€ treatment of Palestinians were a contributing factor to the rise of anti-Semitism.

She added: โ€œanti-Semitism is a rotten thing. Itโ€™s an ignorant, stupid, horrible thing. As is anti-Muslim feeling. They have to be together.โ€

I didn't watch the show right to the end, too tired, but I wish I had've seen her call Mr Abbott a t1t, that would've been a 5 laughy-face moment lol.

17 women killed by DV so far this year.

Brutal death of a woman in Canberra (by former partner) on Saturday, mother of a week old baby, and two other children 9 and11 yrs. She took out an interim domestic violence order a day before she died on her former partner. He also attacked her sister and another man in the house at the same time.

Q&A

I just found this story and I thought I would post it here being a Q&A thread and because i often see some people here complaining that the ABC is a 'leftie' station and the Q&A audiences are all 'lefties'

this is kind of funny

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/qa-questioner-revealed-as-former-liberal-st...

The Q&A audience member who asked a Labor frontbencher if he had "sold his soul" by changing some of his policy positions has been unveiled as a former Liberal staffer who worked for cabinet Minister Bruce Billson until the end of last year.

Candice Lester confronted Labor's junior Treasury spokesman Andrew Leigh on Monday night and asked why he was once in favour of a small Medicare co-payment, deregulated university fees and an increase of the pension age but opposing all policies in opposition.

"Would you say you've sold you soul? Or simply changed your mind? And if you've changed your mind, why?" Ms Lester asked.

"Candice, that's a great question," Dr Leigh responded.
