Queensland To Relax Helmet Laws For Religious

Bob's not the only one who can open a religious discussion:

The State Government announced it will make a helmet exemption for cyclists whose religion requires them to wear headress.

"Cyclists who wear religious headdress will not be required to wear a helmet under a new law the Newman government will introduce.

Last month Brisbane man Jasdeep Atwal successfully challenged a fine for not wearing a helmet - because his religion requires him to wear a turban."

"Mr Atwal said in the Sikh religion men have to wear a turban because it was mandated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhs."

So hang on...

I understand faith and deep religious feeling and all. I understand turbans are a significant symbol of faith for the Sikhs.

I also understand a turban would afford a certain amount of protection to the head in case of an accident.

But the "tenth Guru of Sikhs" tells all the men of the Sikh faith to wear a turban and this edict holds sway over the law of the land which requires helmets to be worn whilst cycling as a safety measure?

Since when does Australian law recognise and heed the edicts of the "tenth Guru of Sikhs"

Another example of blind faith IMO.

Minister Emerson said the new laws which are expected to be in place by the end of the year will bring Queensland in line with the road rules in place for cyclists in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

"I've been looking at it for some time, these exemptions have been in place in other states for some years.

Will the other states follow?

1. Pretty incredible precedent to be setting in this day and age, in a country that is ostensibly secular. Interesting to see what challenges make it to court now. Idiots.

2. Can they not wear the helmet underneath their turban?

3. It's 2013 right?

see post 1, it is not setting a precedent.

It is all wrong, imo. These laws are made for a reason, to protect those who are too stupid to protect themselves.

It is setting a precedent in QLD.

And it is adding to the precedent that was set by whatever was the first idiotic state to bring in the exemption.

It's only a great idea if the people who are injured have paid for their own treatment and somehow managed to reduce the trauma caused to the not at fault driver of a car if they are involved in an accident and die as a result of not wearing a helmet.

Sick to death of religion becoming MORE important in this country. It's 2013 it should be becoming LESS important.

Religion SHOULD NOT trump LAW.

many countries do not have these compulsory laws that we have... they design their roads in cities to make it safe for bikeriders.

statistically since the introduction of these laws many people have stopped riding bikes and something that we need to do is make bike riding more popular again.

I hate wearing a helmet.. it makes it difficult for me to see properly and hear properly... two reasons I don't ride a bike on the road anymore.
