I am flying to Queensland for Christmas and taking a bottle of booze as a present for one of my rellies. Do you know if I am allowed to take it as hand luggage or will it have to go in my suitcase?

It will have to go in your suitcase.

Check with the airline....Duty Free liquor goes as hand luggage so I can not see why it wouldn't on internal flights.

Apologies - I misread your post. Thought you were travelling to NZ.
Wine in carry on is fine on domestic flights.

Thanks folks.
No, Annie I promise I'll ry to resist the temptation.
It would have been easier to buy it once I got there, but I'm on the Red Eye Special and don't arrive till 9.20 a.m. on Christmas morning.

If you bought the wine and drank it before you get on the plane I'm sure you would be allowed to take the empty bottle as hand luggage.
Just trying to be helpful ele

After the odd things I've had confiscated by airport security I'd be taking in luggage.
I had a bottle of water confiscated once, plus nail files and metal case pens.
