Really hope this medicare fee doesn't go ahead

Something really wrong on paying a fee of  $5-$6 on something your taxes are suppose to have covered.

A so called tax on a tax or in the same stupid ideal as a carbon tax.

I understand with the population getting older  is a problem, but this is not the answer and will hurt those most in need.

I know of plenty of people who avoid the doctor because they simply cannot afford to get anything checked out that should be.

Where will those elderly or the poor  who need medical help go? Hospitals?

They will be exempt......

Have any new details of the proposal emerged?   What info do you have?

Yes, I feel the same about the NDIS

at least this "tax" is calling it for what it is, and not some emotive subterfuge to say "we need more money for health care, and we're getting it from you"

But yes, I did read abit about the co payment last night and it seems that a fair few doctors aren't in agreeance with it, and that there are other ways to reduce health costs.

but I wonder if the doctors whole concern is for the patient. Wonder if it's not a little bit for themselves?

Think about it.

1) For those who bulk bill and possibly get a few patients visit more than they really need to, their income is about to be cut as the number of visits decrease.

2) Additionally, the one ailment per visit will fly out the window as people "save em up" and address a few issues in one visit.

3) This will put greater pressure on the doctors, especially with the negligence laws being as volatile as they are.

4) For doctors who already charge over the baseline, they will now have to look at either losing that money themselves or putting their fees up even more, or run the risk of losing patients to the bulk bill copayment system.

5) for both scenarios, because the cost of the service has risen, so too will people's expectations, so the docs are really going to have to ramp things up, cos sick people are the hardest and grumpiest of all to deal with, and even minor things can become world war three. Little mistakes or oversights, or "insufficient value for money" leads to increased complaints. Once people physically pay, they do mind if the room they wait in is a bit warm. They do mind if the chairs aren't so comfy, if the water fountain is empty.... little things like this can make a person more critical.

6) plus as people will possibly wait longer to see the doc, and bring more issues each visit, it will be harder for the doc to stick to the 10minute appointment, so either his waiting times will blow out, he will have to make longer appointments thus reducing the amount of people he can see thus reducing income, and he's going to have to be more on the ball than ever so as to not rush and inadvertently miss something and wind up with a negligence claim.

Some people can go their whole lives and never really live for a single minute.

That is nonsense ....

The current pay upfront system that has replaced bulk billing  has seen local multi doctor  surgaries having enough money to build extensions and buy mutliple clinics. While I see the bulk billing surgeries seems to be stuck decor and facility wise in the 80's.

If the doctor at the local medicare bulk billed clinic was getting rich, he wouldn't be driving a 93 Toyota.

I paid $63 to have a doctor  spend 3 minutes reading out an incorrectly labelled blood test when he had the choice to have follow ups not charged.

Seems to me the upfront payment doctors are the ones getting wealthy.

The doctors here that bulk bill are in the poorer areas and in areas with high numbers of elderly patients.

Oh and during my consoltation he received a phone call, so left my consultation for about a good 5-10 minutes to speak to whoever it was in another room, that was longer than my visit by the way.

i always have my doctor deal with number of issues in one visit; therefore I ask for extended appointment, which costs more.  Doctors here are so busy that most do not take new patients.  If they do not like this scheme it is because they will have to administer it, not because they may lose some patients.  For busy practice that  may mean employing another clerical person.
