Dennis Muller writes about ethical lapses by journalists
disclosure: academic not political writer
I have posted the first part of the article.
An integral power of the media is that of portrayal: the act of determining how people, events, ideas and organisations are described to the public, and therefore how they are perceived by the public. In this way, the media constructs for us our understanding of the world beyond our personal knowledge and experience.
For those of us who have never met Julia Gillard, our perceptions of her are based almost entirely on what we see, hear and read of her in the media. These perceptions are then reflected in public opinion polling, and the publication of these poll results tends to reinforce the perceptions. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.
Eventually, in this case, the poll results got so bad that Gillard’s parliamentary colleagues replaced her as Labor leader with Kevin Rudd.
So of course it is true to say the media played a part in the demise of Gillard as prime minister. The harder question is: did the media play a part that was ethically wrong?
Some elements of the media, notably commercial radio talkback shock jocks Alan Jones, Ray Hadley and Chris Smith, clearly did. Their depictions of, and remarks about, Gillard were disgustingly offensive. Not only were they sexist, extremist and malicious, but in Jones’s case involved encouragement of the idea that the prime minister should be dumped at sea.

Oh yes I'm sure there is a CODE OF ETHICS that doesn't mean journalists necessarily follow it.
That's what the conversation was about. Did you read the article?

so nova you think quantity is a reflection of good government?
I think it is more like TV channels. More channels more carp

Kevin Rudd and his loyal mp's fed the media every little tidbit that they could..
What was the media meant to do?? Hide the story of what was going on behind the front line of the ALP??
If they had not reported any of the tidbits that they had been fed would we think the media were doing their job?
Isn't it the right of the public to know what was happening in the halls of Parliament?
Funny thing is that so many people that I know that are Coalition inclined stopped listening to the media as they were sick and tired of hearing about the war between Rudd and Gillard..
You can't say that they disliked Gillard because of what they heard.. they disliked her because of her failings... YOU may not see what she has done as failings because YOU might see some of the good she has done (yes she has done some good) but a lot of people also see the party as a whole and see the Obeid saga, the major failings in a lot of policies, the gender wars, the Aust Day drama, the 457 Visa lies (still the ALP have not given and proof of their tens of thousands of rorts) ... CO2 tax lie, Mining tax that does not make money....
These are the reasons people disliked Gillard because she was the leader of a party of failings and union biased policy and corrupt union officials.....
Don't worry, we all remember that Rudd started all of these policies... he must own what he started...
The man is cleaning the policies that Gillard should actually get some credit for... he is renaming Gonski and the NDIS... to clear her from the history books of time.. When you google gillard you will see Gonski and NDIS but when you look for any of those policies they will not be found.. they will be renamed and forever will be seen as Rudd's Victories...
Reflections on Gillard and Media... the media are not to blame.. The Australian Labor Party are to blame... People are smarter than what you give them credit for...

Well, that was a quick 360. Last week simply everything in the world was Julia's fault and she had to go. This week she's the good one?
haha give me a break, get clear ideas.

NW, thanks for yet another demonstration
While the mainstream media were thus engaged in their own systemic failings, elements of social media were sordid beyond description, wallowing in pornographic depictions of the prime minister and making slurs of the most degrading kind.

though not one of your 'best' efforts

Ludicrous, the sisterhood deserted her in droves, the only one standing is that old trout Ann Somers.
Gillard was a divisivise figure who could not get any messages across because she lied straight up in the beginning of her tragic term.
People don't like that.:-(
FGS get over this gender thing, she was the PM of Australia, JG thrived on the gender discussion when she realised nothing else was working and then it back fired because everyone was over her by then.
The PM should be seen as non gender.
What happens when TA is away does July Bishop cop all the rubbish ? will she start a gender debate ? No because she is confident in her ability and has a great party backing her with no gender issues.

Yes. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Rudd is being treated far more fairly by them the last few days, you only need to take a look here.

The media like him a whole lot more and boy he is switched on even if he's a nutjob.

Hello , Did you read all of the OP?
It is regarding media ethics .Do you dislike Julia Gillard that much that you aren't prepared to read about the impact of media gone bad by someone who knows how it should be and the impact the media has ?
Would you condone a Dr breaking his code of ethics because you don't like his patient ?
