Our car is in for a roadworthy today, the mechanic asked me if I am keeping or selling the vehicle. I have been asked the same question before when getting a roadworthy and don't understand the relevance - surely a roadworthy is a roadworthy regardless of what your intentions are?
Do they make it not as strict if you're keeping it, or something?

I got a car roadworthy'd by my mechanic... it was going from my mum to me...
The mechanic let a few small things go for the roadworthy... nothing that put anyone's life at risk but he knew I would address soon. the tires were close to unroadworthy but he let them go as he knew they were booked in for my next pay cheque. If I was going to sell the car he would not have given me the certificate until they were done.
Brakes might also be ok but close to replacing... if they are just above the replacement level he might pass the roadworthy but tell you that they need to be done within the next 200km... If you were going to sell the car the new owners would expect to have good brakes and not ones that need replacement within the next month.

I would think it was irrelevant. I never answer those questions myself..... I expect a roadworthy/safety certificate to be the same regardless.

I have never been asked that (NSW).

Yeah, checked with hubby and he said the same as you, Cats_back. I guess it's nice that they go a bit easier if it's your own car, but on the other hand, surely your safety is just as important as the person who may be buying the car?
Anyway, it flew through the check, so that's the main thing!

My son in his earlier days brought quite a few cars, did them up and then sold them.... was often asked if he was the buyer or seller when getting a roadworthy ( it was often me who took the cars in) Never could understand why.

I dont get why you'd want a roadworthy.c if you own & intend to keep a car.
When you take your car for a regular service they should let you know of any faults and if you want them rectified.

In my job i visit about 20 roadworthy testers a week.
The recent trend is to take heaps of photos from all angles.
Some young blokes bring the car in with standard wheels and tyres
and normal exhaust.
Then go home and fit fat wheels and a loud exhaust.
When pulled over by the police-they wave the recent roadworthy certificate
at them.
The tester now has that covered by taking the photos with the time and date on them.
