SBS Proposes Zaky Mallah's Own Show

A written proposal for the SBS show The Feed, obtained by The Weekend Australian, had been drawn up and filming was scheduled to begin as early as this Wednesday.

SBS managing director Michael Ebeid last night confirmed that the proposal for the show with Mallah was being considered.

“There is a proposal floating around but no filming confirmed yet,” Mr Ebeid said. “And yes I am aware they are throwing around a few ideas.”

Filming of Mallah and his co-star Kim Vuga — who recently starred in SBS’s Go Back to Where You Came From — was due to begin next week.

Under the proposal, the two would have been taken to a mosque, Mallah’s parents’ house, the courthouse in Sydney’s west where a female genital mutilation trial is due to be held and — in the words of producer John MacFarlane — “a restaurant in the eastern suburbs (of Sydney) or inner west, home turf of Green party lefties.”

However Finance Minister Matthias Cormann told Sky News today that he had spoken to Mr Ebeid and “any suggestion there was ever any proposal for Zaky Mallah to have his own show is completely wrong”.

A proposal from a freelance journalist “had not gone through the proper editorial processes of SBS yet in any way, shape or form, so I am very confident based on the comments from SBS managing director Michael Ebeid that this will not go ahead in any way, shape or form,” Senator Cormann said

There was a written proposal. It was under consideration.

That on it's own give reason for concern. That it could even be considered. Obviously wiser heads have come and knocked it on the head. For now.

Sorry, I forgot the Australian is subscriber only. Here are the bits that make it clear that it was under consideration:

Planning for the show has been surrounded by intrigue. When Ms Vuga asked whether Mr Ebeid knew of the proposal to use Mallah, MacFarlane replied: “The only thing I should say, Kim, is keep this under wraps because we want to make it happen — we’d rather just get it on TV without him (Mr Ebeid) finding out.”

MacFarlane added: “He’ll know eventually.”

A freelance producer, MacFarlane said of the program’s executive producer, Nick Hayden: “He’s willing to kind of like put his neck on the line and just approve it now, so it’s all kind of ready to go, which is amazing.”

MacFarlane added: “It’s the executive producer’s call, (his view is) I’m willing to back this. If there is trouble it’s not going to be me, it’s going to be him. I feel pretty safe.” He said SBS was prepared to pay Mallah to appear on the program.

In a written proposal for the show, obtained by The Weekend Australian, MacFarlane suggested SBS would film at “Zaky’s parents house”, “a restaurant in the eastern suburbs (of Sydney) or inner west, home turf of Green party lefties” and a “Cronulla cafe”.

Cronulla is the scene of the 2005 race riot in which mobs attacked Muslim youths.

MacFarlane first discussed the idea for the show with Ms Vuga some weeks ago. Of Mallah, Macfarlane said: “The Q&A thing, when you watch him, he seems like a bit of a drop-kick but he’s pretty sharp … He (Mallah) wants to be a media figure.”

Perfect timing for a sensationalist piece on Islam.

Oh and...why do you think a high-up pollie like the Finance Minister, Mr Cormann would have become involved if it was just a runaway piece from the overzealous media?

You are still quoting the first story The Australian published which was ripped off directly from a News Corps piece that was given to them by Vuga (for her 15 mins of sensationalist fame I suspect). Subsequent articles don't make any claims that the SBS show was ever going ahead excpet in McFaralanes head.

McFarlane is not an SBS employee.

The idea had yet to be pitched to anyone at SBS.

The whole thing is a big misguided news grab for The Australian of a story that has been found to be deficient on a topic that is sure to inflict more "I told you so" attitudes in those who are on the anti SBS/ABC bandwagon.

Statement from SBS regarding The Feed

15th August 2015

The idea that Zaky Mallah is being given his own show is completely incorrect.

SBS had confirmed to the journalist that this was not true, yet he decided to run with an incorrect headline.

A freelance journalist had pitched a potential story idea to The Feed, SBS’s youth news and current affairs program, that could have involved Zaky Mallah in a story segment.

The idea was pitched to SBS but no filming had been booked and it had not even progressed past an idea

it seems the story never was true in the first place
