School gates locked during class time

Wilcannia school locks the only gate during the school day. A spokesperson said that it's not only Wilcannia it's everywhere.
None of the schools I've worked at ever lock the gates even after school hours. So I'd like to know where everywhere is.
Apparently it's for the safety of the students

Both the local Primary School and the High School where my girls went have gates that can be locked but any intruder could just hop over the fence.  Most of the fences are only 3-4 feet high.  The only good they would do is prevent the littles from decamping....the bigger kids would have no trouble climbing over.
