Brilliant.
Whether people support halal certification or not, there are lots of people with lots of concerns so its time to investigate it all.
http://www.3aw.com.au/news/bernardis-inquiry-into-food-certification-schemes-20150514-gh1c32.html
Here are the reasons i am against halal certification and the questions i want answered.
1. Why are the fees paid by businesses for halal certification kept secret? Why do the businesss have to sign non disclosure agreements?
2. Why are there 20+ privately run halal certification companies in Australia, all charging whatever amounts they want, when Indonesia only has 1 Government run halal certifier? If foods need to be halal certified, then let the Government run it and let the money go back into the whole Australian community.
3. For meat to be halal, the animal needs to be slaughtered a certain way, throat slit while animal is conscious by a Muslim. Yes, there are some abattoirs that use a reverse stun but, from what i have researched, there are at least 15 abattoirs in Australia that slaughter animals using no stun. It is barbaric. This video is very graphic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAQJ-FZo1cA
4. Australia is a predominantly Christian country, so why are we being forced to eat meat that has been prayed over to a "god" that we dont even recognise?
5. If halal certification is supposed to help Muslims recognise what they can and cant eat, then why do so many companies that pay for the certification stamp choose not to display it on their products?
6. Why are abattoirs paying a certification fee and then packing all the meat in one truck and delivering it to butchers and supermarkets who then put it all in the one fridge and display it all in the one display fridge. Once pork products are shelved, stored or transported with other meats, the other meats immediately become non halal anyway. So Aussie Muslims cant eat it anyway.
7. We are told halal certification monies goes towards to building of more mosques and Islamic schools. We know that there are quite a few mosques where the hatred of Australia is preached. As for Islamic schools, the same schools where a principal has said that girls are forbidden to run in races because it will cause them to lose their virginity. Do we need schools like that here?
8. In Canada halal certification money was found to be used to fund organisations linked to extremist organisations. I have no doubt that would be happening here as well.
9. Halal is a part of sharia law and we DO NOT want any part of Sharia law in Australia.
So, what would i like to see? Id like halal certification to be a Government run organisation. Id like every business who pays for halal certification to have to display the stamp on their products. I want all Australian abattoirs to stun before killing. That would be a nice start

Kosher applies to Food, Halal certification applies to all things 'permissible', which is almost everything. So outside of food halal certification applies to real estate, finance, fashion, media, pharmaceuticals, communication etc etc etc.
Big difference between halal and Kosher.

Why? Because what he sais was completely rational? Is that what we are calling idiots these days?
He is 100% spot on of course - be grateful for certifaction or who knows what you would be putting into your mouth unknowingly. Gees without the label you might be unwittingly indulging in a halal feast lol.

Correct. Halal is a guide for living and doing the right hing in your day to day activitites and includes food. And if anyone took the time to inform themselves, they would find these guidelines sensible and ordinary.
Kosher relates only to food.
But food seems to be the offender.
And yes there is a big difference between kosher and halal food, in particular meat. Halal is humane slaugher, kosher is not.
I don't know how many times it has to be said - to be kosher, an animal HAS to be alive when it is killed. Not so with halal - stunning is acceptable and this is the way the animals are killed.

I read that some Apple juice is "filtered" using beef gelatin and is therefore not suitable for muslim consumption.
Even the Muslim scholars disagree on what constitutes food that Allah says is OK to consume
.... how totally confusing....

Is Gelatin Halal:
Only fish gelatin is Halal.
Gelatin in USA and Canada is not Halal but if it obtained from pork then it will be Haram.
Gelatin is also made from Non Zabiha beef which is considered as not Halal by many Islamic Scholars.
There is no gelatin from zabiha Halal beef in USA and Canada.
Fish Gelatin has to be mentioned under ingredients statement.
The ingredient gelatin means either Haram if obtained from pig or Not Halal if obtained from non zabiha beef.
Please do not consume any food products or vitamins with gelatin unless it says fish gelatin or made from fish gelatin.
Is Kosher Gelatin Halal:
Kosher gelatin is not Halal because it is made either from pork or non zabiha beef and therefore kosher gelatin from pork is Haram.
Kosher gelatin is also obtained from kosher certified beef but it is not Halal because the Sachet a Rabbi who slaughter animals pronounce Allah's name on the first animal and last and no in between.
Some liberal Rabbis is also consider pig gelatin as kosher with kosher symbol K appears on yogurts containing kosher gelatin and Jell-O Gelatin because they think the original pig collagen changed during gelatin processing.
What are the requirements of a Halal ice cream
The following are the requirements of a Halal Ice Cream
1. It must a have a Kosher symbol which meets the Halal requirements
(why not Halal symbol) because many ice cream products with Halal symbol are made with alcohol containing natural or artificial flavor and Halal certifying organizations say that 0.1% or 0.5% alcohol is Halal and it does not make you intoxicated.
But there is no Hadith which says 0.1% or 0.5% intoxicant (Alcohol) as Halal.

There's not a big difference between halal and kosher certification, kosher food labeling is also being investigated as well as organic and GM foods and the senate investigation is about food- nothing else according to Cory Bernadi's website

I suspect an enquiry into "free range" accreditation might have a few egg producers running for cover.
on 23-05-2015 02:45 PM
Debra you say they aren't that different because they are both being investigated? Sorry but I'm not sure how that makes any sense.
They are similar in that they are both religious certification schemes, and they are similar in that they use similar practices of slaughter, however that's really where the similarities stop. Halal Certification as far bigger with far broader scope than Kosher is.

no I was just pointing out what the senate investigation covers- they don't mention anything about real estate etc.
and that kosher meat is killed in a similar fashion to halal meat except that the animals are not stunned
here are some articles from the RSPCA
