Sharks Don't Like Bubbles, Ay!

Divers could be armed with a device that fires big intense bubbles and beaches could be enveloped with "bubble curtains" to scare off big sharks as WA scientists report some success in tests of innovative shark deterrents.

The University of WA academics, who are funded by the State Government, are testing the sharks' reactions to bubbles, sounds and bright flashing lights underwater.

Professor Collin said they had "some quite encouraging results" with bubbles in WA and hoped to get similar reactions from South African great whites.

He said if the bubbles worked to deter great whites, a bigger compressor could be used to fire off a line of bubbles at a beach when a shark is detected.

Sharks Don't Like Bubbles, Ay!

Remember that shark repellent they used to equip aviators with?  They found out that, to a shark, it was like mustard on a hot dog..........

They do off Mt Druitt Heads

My best mate is a pro fisherman and works off Nambucca Heads.

They use a technique called bubbling to catch GT's (giant trevally) and Stripeys (slimy and spotted mackerel.)

They preferably use 2 litre white empty plastic containers with a fixed line. They drop them in a sweep and then as the

school come through some take the bait and the fishermen track and chase the white "bubbles" across the water surface

until they can gaff the fish. The bubbles floatation properties stop the fish being able to dive.

When large schools come through they use whatever they can get..... sometimes even 20 litre white containers.

They had 5 rigs off a 20 litre container about 2 months ago and got a huge strike.

They chased the big bubble for about 10 minutes and were just closing in to about 2 metres.

Baggy was ready and swang with the gaff. he noticed something black under the bubble.

They were in a 6 metre pro fishing boat. a white pointer launched out of the water and not only swallowed 7 odd GT's

and two 2 litre containers that got caught in the line but also the 20 litre container and dived out of sight never to be

seen again. Baggy is scottish, aged somewhere between 60 and death, and speaks in an almost unintelligble scottish brogue that Robert Bruce would be proud

of. and I quote " it was like the sound of  freight train, the roar's louder than a waterfall and the water

cascaded from 'is choppers just like the rocks in the rapids above a waterrfall. could 'ave fitted two 44's (205 litre drums)

in easy." The splash rocked the boat that hard that baggy almost fell out

Baggy and his brother estimated 8 metres given that the strike ocurred just behind the stern of the boat and when the

shark landed it struck the frt gunnel of the aluminium boat removed a part of the rail and embedded a tooth in what rail

and frt gunnel he left.

He and his brother have rolled the boat twice on the river mouth sand bar, struck a whale and spent 20 hrs drifting in a

disabled sinking boat in huge seas and both still maintain that the shark strike is the closest they have ever come to

meeting their maker while at work.

Not much phases Baggy and I have heard him tell the shark story many many times you can see by the look in his eye

that it really really scared and amazed him... and he is not Robinson Crusoe there ....he puts us all of surfing for a few

days everytime he tells the story

atheism is a non prophet organization
