Tony Abbott’s daughter Frances received a “chairman’s scholarship” for a degree costing more than $60,000 from the Whitehouse Institute of Design where an Abbott donor sits as chairman on the board of governors, Guardian Australia can reveal.

The revelation raises questions for the prime minister over whether the scholarship should have been declared on his interests register.

The Coalition government is also under pressure over changes to higher education funding announced in the budget.

Frances Abbott undertook a bachelor of design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney from 2011 to 2013. Guardian Australia has confirmed that she received a scholarship during her time at the institute.

“Frances definitely was a student with us and received a chairman’s scholarship,” Leanne Whitehouse, director of the Institute told Guardian Australia. She declined to detail how many times the “chairman’s scholarship” has been awarded previously, but the institute’s website makes no references to the scholarship and states the institute “does not currently offer scholarships to gain a place into the Bachelor of Design”.

Not true. My eldest gained an academic scholarship to a private school. We are neither wealthy nor well connected. Had only lived in .australia one year at that time.

My youngest recieved a Uni grant last year (30 applied, 5 successful) for a work placement internship (required in her degree) in Asia.

These awards ARE given on merit.

I don't know why some try and deflect from this issue by saying FA was awarded the scholarship back in 2011.

1. Her father was Leader of the Opposition when the 'deal' was done.

2. The free tuition has only come to light this week, which is why people are commenting on it NOW.

merit's one thing am3.....connections or connections+merit is another especially when in the public eye don't you think and ESPECIALLY when public servants are being culled and the general population is being told to tighten their belts AND education fees are going up, Up, UP!

special concessions for the select, well connected IMO:

tsk tsk TSK!..........DFAT anger over Louise Abbott's foreign affairs job
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/dfat-anger-over-louise-abbotts-forei...

There was internal disquiet at DFAT in Canberra about what some staff  saw as a lack of transparency in the hiring and how Ms Abbott came to be doing  high-level work, such as delivering a public statement on disarmament, when  there were up to 14 policy specialist attached to the mission.....

Re the budget news re higher uni fees and increase in interest rates..

That was probably the impetus for someone to leak the story about the free tuition fir FA to the news at this time... The point being .. the PM daughter gets free tuition but he is making it more expensive than ever for the rest of the countries uni students.

The course costs more than $60 000. FA had to pay around $6-7000.. Bargain!

Wrong.

I don't blame the students for protesting. But be assured it is not because of Frances Abbott and her so called scholarship.
