Tony Abbott’s daughter Frances received a “chairman’s scholarship” for a degree costing more than $60,000 from the Whitehouse Institute of Design where an Abbott donor sits as chairman on the board of governors, Guardian Australia can reveal.

The revelation raises questions for the prime minister over whether the scholarship should have been declared on his interests register.

The Coalition government is also under pressure over changes to higher education funding announced in the budget.

Frances Abbott undertook a bachelor of design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney from 2011 to 2013. Guardian Australia has confirmed that she received a scholarship during her time at the institute.

“Frances definitely was a student with us and received a chairman’s scholarship,” Leanne Whitehouse, director of the Institute told Guardian Australia. She declined to detail how many times the “chairman’s scholarship” has been awarded previously, but the institute’s website makes no references to the scholarship and states the institute “does not currently offer scholarships to gain a place into the Bachelor of Design”.

The  left may want to take her scholarship up with Julia as  Frances Abbott was awarded the scholarship in 2011 "based on her application and art portfolio

Now who was the PM in 2011 I wonder...

,in which case what has it got to do with him other than the fact that he is her father

A rarely granted scholarship (only one previous recipient)) A friend of the Abbotts,  LNP donor &  Chairman of the College recommends Abbotts daughter.. thats what. Also the Chairman 'can't remember' if he recommended anyone else.

If he is recommending people on merit and can't even remember them 2-3 years later??? Given so few are granted.

It has nothing to do with who is or was Prime Minister.

It's not even a comment about Frances.  The comment was about accepting a $60,000 scholarship for a family member from a political supporter and not declaring it.

It's only natural that any perks for politicians and their families will come under close scrutiny as they as they slash and burn and expect the general population to do " the heavy lifting"

It's of particular insult when you consider the views he expressed about other students today.

Unless there has been quid pro quo then what's the problem, does it really effect your life's that much or is just a case of the jolly green giant

No, if she's a student she would be classed as a dependent.

All the other students have to pay up front or pay later by HELP scheme.

In my opinion it's bad form to put his daughter into the position of taking favour.

Actually it has everything to do with who she is.

Whitehouse (an exclusive private college BTW nero so not part of the education portfolio) does NOT award scholarships for studying there. Scholarships are simply not part of their remit.

They proudly gave a scholarship to another student some years ago. But it was not for tuition at the college. It was to do a dissertation at an overseas sister institution. They paid a years fees.

That means that the Prime Minsiters daughter is the ONLY person to recieve a scholarship for fees at Whitehouse. EVER.

How suss.

The Budget - Private colleges: gain extension of Govt funding.

I wonder if Whitehouse Institiute of Design would be eligible for this Govt funding.

Yes it gets massive funding. Not sure if the funding is Federal but it gets a ridiculous amount of state funding.

When I was lecturing at uni, there was lots of discussion about why they were getting ANY funding at all. Aside from capital funding, the vast majority of funding at that level was for scholarly research. Whitehouse isn't a rsearch based institution so no-one could ever understand why they got so much govt money.

It really makes no sense.

This was at the end of one of the ariticles on the scholarship

In the federal budget, the government announced that from 2016 it would for the first time extend direct government funding to private colleges.
