So disappointed in Joe :(

I cannot believe how much Mr Hockey has disappointed me this year.Woman Sad

ASPIRING treasurer Joe Hockey has been caught breaching parliamentary rules after failing to declare a family interest for almost his entire 17-year career in federal parliament.

Mr Hockey declared the directorship of Steel Harbour Pty Ltd held by his wife, Melissa Babbage, in May last year among a series of "new positions" under spouse declaration rules.

But business records show Ms Babbage was appointed to the role in 1998.

Pecuniary interest register declarations are supposed to be made within a month.

Mr Hockey yesterday suggested he was clueless about his wife's business interests for 14 years and would not explain what the company did.

Gee, that inspires confidence in his abilities, doesn't it?

JOE: Business is the backbone of the Australian economy.

PETER: ..and Melissa has made all the money. Until recently, she was a top executive with Deutsche Bank. Would it be fair to say that in your married life together, Melissa's earned three times what you've earned, 5 times what you've earned, 10 times what you've earned?

JOE: I'm sure you've out-earned me every year. Almost every year. I don't know how much she's earned. I don't know. And I've - yeah, absolutely, deliberately - I don't want to know if she owns shares or what the situation is because I think it puts me in a conflict position.

PETER: So Melissa makes the investments but doesn't tell you "We're into BHP and we're out of..."

Hi Meep,

If he listed her directorship... 'and as new' position last year:...

regardless of if he Knew or not (very convenient for him to say he was deliberately clueless btw  ) ...

and his wife's directorship isn't a 'NEW position'  is it ?

That in itself, is, I would assume going by the info in the opening post ,misleading and incorrect information  and a big big no no...a LIE.

He had a month  to declare her position when it was in fact a new position .....he didn't did he ?Bit um err difficult for him to put the correct date when it WAS a new position don't you think ?

How would he now account for not doing that way back then ?

How can her directorship be considered a new position?  He didn't want to know and therefore he didn't know ...and all is OK  ? lol. ..nudge nudge wink wink

I know nothing of her affairs  etc.... she has a new job and it took him all this time to notice ? sounds like a few new jobs.

i know these people are busy, and forgive me for  doubting .. but i reckon he'd have to know .. unless they dont talk.

Opposition parliamentary secretary Jamie Briggs has appeared on ABC News 24 to talk about the Coalition's costings:

Lyndal Curtis: If the budget is in so much trouble, haven't you identified today $31 billion of savings you could put straight on the bottom line if you weren't spending a fair proportion of that?

Briggs: What we want to do is grow the economy. We want the economy to grow faster, have more jobs created by the economy and give Australians more opportunity to become richer, more prosperous.

More from the interview:

Curtis: You will still spend billions of dollars that have been outlined in this election campaign and I'll ask you again, if there was a budget emergency, if there was actually a budget emergency, wouldn't you be putting the savings you've made, the cuts you're prepared to make on the bottom line?

Briggs: We acknowledge we've got a plan for the future, absolutely. We've been talking about our Real Solutions plan now for some time and that is about driving growth and encouraging the economy to do better and there are plans in that Real Solutions plan to ensure we're encouraging activity and meeting what we see as needs in the economy."

that isn't an answer briggs

'New jobs' that don't become 'new jobs' even if he didn't know about them before.

I think that you are right LL, they'd have to not talk and not live together  at least and even then I really doubt that that he couldn't know...children talk, other people talk (about all sorts of things ..) ,phone calls get overheard/answered,mail gets seen etc.

Brigg's nonanswer is straight out of their book
