Someone tried to break into my house! :(

Through the roof! ๐Ÿ˜ž

Yesterday while I was at work, the neighbour across the road came over to tell my grandmother (at my house babysitting 13 month old) that there are roof tiles lifted and a big hole that will let in a lot of the rain forecast for the afternoon!?!?

She had a look and it was pretty easy to see. At the front of the house.
Luckily my BIL is a builder and once I'd had the phone calls at work, my sis phoned her hubby to pop over and check it out.

He said that tiles had been pulled off enough to let a person slip through! He replaced the tiles and sealed some cracked ones next to the removed ones.

About 20 mins later we had a quick but heavy downpour of rain so happy that he fixed it.....

But now I'm worried! Why would someone want to come in through the roof? It's pretty open at the front of the house, surely a would-be thief would go around the back where it's less open and break in through a window or back glass door?

I had trouble sleeping last night, and feel very uneasy today ๐Ÿ˜•

I'm home now til Mon, need to speak to neighbours and go to local Police station to make a report.

I bet more people keep family dogs in their backyard than they do lions.

Na....more like bed bugs martini - had to kick my female sheppie off the bed last night - somehow she has it in her head that she's sharing it with me....!!!  lol

I can't imagine growing up without a dog, or not having one (make that two) now.

BTW OP....I went looking for some objective info on how tiles are installed, held in place and dislodged etc.   See Monier manual below as an example.   You'll note they use a range of clips to hold the tiles on & nails (which somebody else mentioned) and if these are not in place or not installed as per the 'safety' standards, then it is not a far stretch for one tile to dislodge and the rest go with it.  (Hey like tradies would do that right?...install the roof substandard?  never !!)  lol

Apparently once one is loose, the wind can get under it and shift a whole row.   It's quite a normal feature of storm damage in insurance claims as a matter of fact...

I know your BIL is a builder, but I can't recall a builder I know who installs tiles...

There are standards that have to be met including how the tiles are secured so they don't become a hazard in high wind, or slide off on somebody's head.   Give this manual (or get one for your type of tile) to the BIL and ask him to inspect the roof thoroughly to see if it was in fact installed as per standard.  That's where I'd start.   I'm sure Fair Trading will have the general industry standards and your BIL will also be able to access those as a builder.

Dogs can add so much to family life but in saying that if your plate is full with bubs and too much else is going on then its probably a good idea to leave it for a later date. If you do ever decide to buy a dog do some research, you don't necessarily need a big dog, the lil ones bark a treat as well, just look for a breed that is known for its temperament etc.

Can't say I've ever keep a lion in the garden lol.  I have a dalmatian and a labradoodle though do they count LOL!!!

LOL bella, I fostered a Maltese Terrier who would launch himself thru the air at my Rotties throats......they used to look at me like "Is he Serious"?

At one point we had a great laugh when Maltese Terriers made it onto the 'Dangerous Dog List'.  The Rotties just weren't safe anymore once it became official...:^O

Actually it was pretty funny to watch a little Maltese acting like a lion....He was 'da big boss'

? Don't know if I missed something? Who's calling who stupid?

Dad is far from stupid, fairly high intelligence I'd say.

Ex has below average intelligence.... IMO.

was referring to your ex-. Either he is extremely careless to make it so obvious or he's an idiot.

Kylie, I can only say that my the character of my ex changed a great deal after we left. To the point that we had him and his girlfriend threaten to have our house stormed through by biker friends. He sat by listening and laughing when she told my eldest daughter she was "something her mother should have swallowed rather than...". Witheld CS for the three weeks before Christmas so he could buy the gf a lovely gold and diamond necklace.

I never would have imagined having to get Police protection from him. He also started off with the late night / middle of the day driveby's, listing our phone numbers (including his daughter's) on adult pages. This is only a small amount of the stuff we went through.

I KNOW this is more the exception than the rule with regards to marriage break ups, but just keep your eyes open. I am not saying it is likely to have been him. I am also not saying it couldn't have been. Just don't make any assumptions either way.

It is great you are taking sensible steps to protect yourself and your beautiful family. I think distancing him from YOUR home is a really good step. There is no reason he can't have time with her somewhere neutral. You also don't have to be the one to drop her off or pick her up. It seems to be you he is clinging to.

You are doing a great job honey.

bob.... He has done many stupid things over the past 7 years That had me curious if he was in fact STUPID!? He's often begged my kids not to tell me things that he has done.

if he did it I'd have to guess it was to make me feel nervous without a man in the house.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it now, just be aware and safety conscious.
