Student Protesters Are Revolting

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has branded the students at his former university “revolting”.

Speaking at a Liberal Party fundraiser in Melbourne on Friday night, a tongue-in-cheek Mr Abbott said: “I always thought the students were revolting at my old university.”

His quip comes after Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop was mobbed at the University of Sydney before she announced an extra 1000 placements for overseas study trips under new government funding.

Mr Abbott, joined by Environment Minister Greg Hunt and Small Business Minister Bruce Billson, told the audience at Mornington Race Club that there would be more protests.

“This is but a foretaste of what is to come,” he said.

“But we must stay the course because if we are deterred, the future of our country is grim.”

Mr Abbott defended his pre-election promises saying he was determined to make hard calls.

“I don’t know if this government is going to be popular, but by God it’s going to be respected,” he said.

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence said the comment was made in jest.

“We believe that the Prime Minister was making a joke and appreciate that he is demonstrating the same good humour that the Foreign Minister showed on Friday,” he said.

He said students had a right to protest but not to use violence.

Yesterday Education Minister Christopher Pyne called for the students to be charged with assault.

He also called on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to join the Government in condemning the “incomprehensible” behaviour of the students, who were protesting proposed cuts to higher education funding.

“Everyone is entitled to have a view — whether they like the Government, whether they don’t like the Government; whether they like or dislike particular policies,” Mr Pyne said.

“But the behaviour of the students yesterday at Sydney University was assault.”

totally agree with these comments by Mr Pyne. I'm certainly not happy that my taxes foster this sort of behaviour by certain groups of students.

Tony Burke, the Manager of Opposition Business...no, not a berk, a word not able to be used here. (Although Pyne did dispute he said that word, instead insisting he said grub)

Some students were going to take a gap year next year and go overseas on a gap year program.  In 2015 Uni fees are at exisitng rates. From 2016 the new higher fees take affect.

Those students are cancelling their gap year prorgam now, because they don't want to miss out on 1 year of lower fees.

For those in NSW things are even worse....seems that TAFE and job training costs are also going up & up

http://www.smh.com.au/comment/education-catch22-will-get-a-lot-worse-20140517-38gym.html

Education catch-22 will get a lot worse

Young unemployed in NSW and next year's school graduates are in for a nasty double whammy.

Not only do they face the Abbott government's tough "earn or learn" welfare restrictions from January 1, but hefty fee hikes for jobs training, courtesy of the state government, will kick in on the same day.

A school-leaver or newly unemployed young person won't be able to access welfare for six months unless they enrol full-time in a course, under rules announced in the federal budget.

But to "learn" at TAFE or one of the new private providers offering workplace training next year, students will face fees of up to $4000 for basic certificates. Forty per cent of students will face fee rises of more than $500.

Yes, that is the sticking point in the unemployed 'youth must study'... the course fees are very expensive, plus training & education programs have been cut already...so there is less they can apply for.

Also there is only so many people per course accepted. Some courses application only, and have traditionally had a lot more applicants than places available.

Can't study if you

1) Can't afford the course fee

and/or

2)  Miss out on a place in course you applied for and have to wait another 6mths or 1 year to apply again.

Hundreds of youth being churned out of TAFE's with the same certificates isn't going to increase their chance of employment either, just makes more competition for the few jobs that are available.

If a person under 30 is in receipt of a Govt benefit they may get some subsidised fee for a TAFE Course, but if they are in the no dole eligibility group, they will have no income, no subsidised fees.
