Supermarkets, Locals In Pub Row

Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have clashed with residents over development plans for two popular local hotels.

In Riverton, residents have started a campaign against plans to demolish the High Road Hotel and replace it with a bottle shop and Coles supermarket.

It's a sorry pass indeed when Supermarkets can pull down their customer's beloved heritage buildings because their is an "public appetite" for more shopping.

the people living there having been shopping for years.

The shopping centre where I shop which has a Woolworth's has plans approved for a Coles and an Aldi to be built on the car parks.

Reminds me of McDonalds. Here in Victoria, local residents tried & tried to stop them from building one of their "UGLY Fast Junk Food  Palaces" in Belgrave, a lovely quaint village in the Dandenong Ranges. All this in vain I'm afrad to say. Huge Companies usually push their might onto others and normally get their way. 😞

If Coles builds the first supermarket in a particular area, then Woolies will want to build one nearby (and vice versa) to get a share of the market.

Both of them are intending to get into the 'convenience' (express) store market now, either opening new mini stores or taking over existing ones when they can (7/11's etc).
