Surprise ...... ABS has crashed

This just highlights the fact that information security cannot be guaranteed if computers are involved.

Ah well, I suppose it will all be up and running okay for the next few days. I do hope most people tick the box for allowing their info to be released in 100 years. I do a lot of family research and the 1901 and 1911 british census forms have been a godsend. It really is a criminal shame if info is destroyed. None of us will be here in 100 years anyway so what will it hurt?

They said (whoever 'they' are, lol) the info will be kept for 4 years.

They also said IBM was paid millions for the software.

Heads should  may roll.

How on earth can this happen?

Hi YCDI! ♥

I raced home from work to do it. I was so happy it had crashed! I could put my feet up and have a cup of tea instead.

Paper one was left at my door last week so I filled that in and posted it this morning. Wasn't even going to try and do it online as I knew that the site would crash

Why do people keep saying it crashed?  It was attacked four times and after the fourth attempt they closed it.  It's about time hackers were treated as the serious criminals they are in this day and age.  They are mythologised in movies and other media as clever little computer geeks who do more good than harm.  They are the modern equivalent of horse thieves and should be treated as such.

It's early and I'm grumpy.

And we are expected to believe the mob of taxpayer funded liars as to what happened with the ABS website.
If it was hacked why didn't they say they had closed it. Instead they insisted people keep attempting to complete their census.
Sounds like some PR boffin came up with the hacked excuse.
Should actually clear up that a "denial of service" attack isn't actually a hack.

the very first thing i thought when they announced there was a problem wasnt 'oh i bet they have been hacked'

its was 'i bet there were so many people trying to log into their site it couldnt cope'

there phone help lines were doing the same in the days leading up to tuesday night. talkback radio was swamped by people complaining all they got when calling the help line if they got through was a recorded message saying they were experiencing too many callers to handle please call back later.

luckily i recieved the full paper version of the census and the envolope so i posted mine in yesterday.

i also believe from what was said on radio it was likely my version of windows/browser wasnt supported by the ABS/census program

very little of that bug was mentioned leading up to the night.
