Victoria in the short 2 weeks since the election has already become the STRIKE capital of Australia and UNION controlled

Next it will be a beer strike -- airline strike - public transport strike -- building CFMEU strike -- the list will go on -- History repeating itself !

Melbourne docks to shut down for 32 hours as union, DP World lock horns

A UNION war on Melbourne’s docks is threatening to delay deliveries in the lead up to Christmas.

The DP World controlled section of the docks will be shut down for 32 hours from today as an industrial relations battle heats up.

The Maritime Workers Union is taking legal industrial action with a rolling 24-hour strike from 6.30am.

DP World has hit back by locking out workers on Friday for eight hours in retaliation.

The dispute could lead to ugly tensions last seen in 1998 when Patricks tried to tackle the docks workers’ union.

DP World has sent a letter out to workers blaming the MUA for the delay in reaching a pay deal.

“Their expectations are completely outrageous and the union has lost touch with reality,” the note read.

They still have over 50 claims on the table and are demanding a pay increase of 4.5 per cent.”

DP World has offered the MUA an 11.2 per cent pay rise over four years.

But the union has demanded 18 per cent over the same period and better redundancy conditions amid fears the docks would be automated resulting in significant job losses.

The Melbourne strike coincides with industrial action in Sydney and Fremantle as the union ramps up pressure on DP World.

But Warren Smith, assistant secretary of the MUA, said workers were fighting for a fair deal.

“All we want to see is a fair selection process for who is made redundant. Ultimately we want voluntary redundancies,” he said.

DP World said it was working to limit disruption to shipment deliveries.

In an Australian first, Victoria's newly elected Labor government has promised it will stop pet shops from selling dogs and cats that aren't from registered animal shelters.

It’s a historic move aimed at cracking down on puppy farms, where dogs are often kept in overcrowded and filthy environments for the sole purpose of breeding. Pet shops and online trading sites are commonly used by puppy farmers as a front for their businesses.

some more good news from VictoriaWoman Happy

http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2014/dec/14/houses-acquired-for-melbournes-east-west-link-...

Houses acquired for Melbourne's East West Link to be offered to needy for Christmas

The Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, says empty houses will be offered to previous owners and then to poorer families

Houses compulsorily acquired to build Melbourne’s stalled East West Link project could be used for needy families at Christmas.

Work on the $6.8bn road tunnel project has been halted by the new Labor government.

The premier, Daniel Andrews, says the Victorian government will look at ways to use houses already emptied in preparation for the tunnel.

“I’d like people who want to move back into those homes be given an option to do just that,” he said on Sunday.

“If people choose, having moved on, to not come back to those homes, then I know there are many, many needy families across our community, particularly at this time of year.”

Andrews said using the homes to house needy families at Christmas would be good for them and the community.

The East West Link business case documents will be released to the media in a lock-up at 9.30am on Monday, before being made public shortly afterwards.

Why would they offer them just for christmas and then where are they meant to go after that? Or am I reading it wrong and they are just embellishing the story by adding the christmas angle?

We could do with some extra public housing, such a long waiting list.

They could be used for short term emergency housing, with an income to the govt for the rent paid.

However, it appears to me that a change to the business case documents will reveal a more long term vacancy for those houses (or even a sell-off) than was planned by the former government.

And it seems Queensland Labor are promising to do the same thing if they are given the chance.
