The Appalling Asylum Seeker Conditions

This is disgraceful and I can only hope the people who are in charge fix this asap.

An asylum seeker who was moved off Nauru to give birth is being locked up for 18 hours a day in a detention centre in Brisbane while her week-old baby remains in hospital with respiratory problems.

The case of Latifa, a 31-year-old woman of the persecuted Rohingya people of Myanmar, has shocked churches and refugee advocates.

She was separated from her baby on Sunday, four days after a caesarean delivery, and has since been allowed to visit him only between 10am and 4pm in Brisbane's Mater Hospital. The boy, named Farus, has respiratory problems and needs round-the-clock medical care.

Latifa is confined to the Brisbane Immigration Transit Accommodation, 20 minutes away, where her husband and two children, four and seven, are being held.

Latifa's husband, Niza, is not allowed to visit the child at all, according to people in daily contact with the family.

did you look at what they actually offer and to whom? it is no more or no less than what Australia offers and provides.

One of those links is from 2010, the other August 2013.

What is the LNP's policy? (who formed Govt in Sept 2013). For people arriving AFTER the election date 2013?

TA's stop the boats, turn back the boats, they won't set foot in Australia - where did does that give the impression they can land and be placed in motels?

Don't let's forget the poor little english kiddies that were separated from their parents and told they were orphans and transported to Australia and made to work in sometimes horrendous condition in building up our glorious nation.

Asylum seekers in Darwin 'showing signs of torture'
A Darwin-based support network for asylum seekers says some who arrived by boat in Top End waters earlier this week are showing signs of torture
  •

Emma Murphy from the Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network (DASSAN) told ABC Radio that a boat carrying 50 people from Somalia and four from Pakistan was intercepted by an Australian Customs vessel at sea off Darwin on Monday night.

"[The asylum seekers] were given a note saying go back or you'll be taken to PNG or Nauru. Then the boat left and came back several hours later and the asylum seekers were brought into Darwin," Ms Murphy said.

DASSAN says its sources have reported that many of the asylum seekers from Somalia were showing visible signs of torture but the support group was unable to confirm where the asylum seekers received their injuries.

Federal Government policy is for asylum seekers to be transferred offshore with 48 hours, however these asylum seekers have been held at Darwin's Blaydin Detention Centre for five days now.

"Originally we did think that they would begin to be sent to Christmas Island and onto Nauru or Manus Island on Wednesday but as of [Thursday] night they were still here in Darwin and apparently the reason they were still here is because of delys with their medical clearances," Ms Murphy said.

Yes, it is a better system than here. Maybe not the Govt, but the Churches and charities, as mentioned above, spend 6 months with each family or individual and help them settle in in many ways.

They don't send boat people with no documentation to Manus Island.

Now you are getting really off track in a thread about hospital treatment of a mother who arrived by boat.

The English kiddies, didn't want to/seek to come to Australia,  they weren't being persecuted in their own country, a whole different topic to refugees/asylum seekers.

when quoting the greats, it also helps to put their words into the context they intended.

She was an adulterous author living in a time when neither adultery or female authors were acceptable to mainstream society.

and as such you dismiss her  and her words ?

pfffft

not at all, but the quote has no relevance to the situation being discussed. Interesting how you cut out the part of my response that quantified this and the context of my last line.

Tell me Iza, do you believe that should I turn up to another country tomorrow (The only citizenship that I have is Australian) without prior notification and approval that they will allow me into their country and make available to me all of the resources at their disposal without investigation and clearance?

On one hand I am hoping that you tell me this is true because I am in the process of preparing for an eminent overseas trip, but then, on the other hand, I hope that you can't because it will mean that the time consuming and often expensive (and sometimes painful) preparations I have taken in the past will have been unnecessary.

Please tell me which country will allow anyone to just rock up uninvited and unannounced, welcome a person with open arms and make available to them all available resources as well as resources that the country does not even possess?

Which country, Iza?

Just name one.
