Mother saves life of son's killer in Iran
Murder and several other crimes are punishable by death in Iran.
But under the country's interpretation of Islamic laws in force since the 1979 revolution, a victim's family has the right to spare a convict's life in return for financial payment.
....................
I agree with the Death Penalty for some crimes.
I'm not sure that I like the idea of a victim's family being able to grant immunity, and definitely not for money.
I think that provides an opportunity for extortion, blackmail and corruption and potentially pardons some of society's most detestable beings whilst others may not be able to raise the funds to pay off the hangman.

I actually found that story a lot more satisfying than the clogged death row situation in the states. The victims mother showing forgiveness.. seeing the stupidity of old testament 'eye for eye' (islam and christendom aren't too different) makes that woman an enlightened person in my book. like the chap kenny from adelaide who lost his son in Bali, she was able to rise above the primitive base instincts such as revenge. that is a story of hope.

Sold her soul son to the devil
No amount of money would be enough for me to 'forgive' the killer of one of my children, whether it be DP, life or whatever - my children mean more to me than a quick buck, and I would want the perpetrator to pay to the fullest extent of the law in whatever country I resided.
If she forgave for the sake of her belief or her God - that's fine, but for the sake of financial gain, she didn't deserve her son in the first place IMO.

i read another version of the story that was less focused on islam bashing. the womans motivation for forgiveness was not money but empathy.. but hey, newsltd look for as many anti-islam iranian stories as they can get their bigot mitts on.

I agree LL. Having spent a considerable time in the middle east in a previous life, I found Iranians kind, very well educated, aware, surprisingly westerised, honest and compasionate. I understand the mother's motives.
Iran was the only ME country where I felt safe on my own, and felt welcomed by the people who respect western women..
I believe nothing that is printed in the the Murdoch tabloids about Iran and its people.

Reacted to the OP - and I stand by that.
Have to admit, I rarely click on links so did not know there was another side, still, easy to say one thing and mean another hey?
Of course no-one would 'admit' to money being the reason - they need to remove money from the equation - Forgive or not ?

It depends on the circumstances.
Say in the case of Oscar Pistorius. If I was Reeva's mother I think I would understand that Oscar had been off his face on drugs that night and didn't realise what he'd done til he'd come back down.
I think I could forgive him while grieving for my daughter.
Say if it was in the case of Simon Gittany in throwning Lisa Harnum off the balcony. I'd want to stab him in the eye with my car key if they let me close enough.
