The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Hi grandmoon I do hope you are better soon.. concrete dust!  Oh erk indeed... horrible stuff and better to get far away from.

I'm here richo... does anyone remember when our mothers would put salt and bi-carb into the greens they were cooking to make them taste nice and be soft?

I was thinking about it the other day when I put my bit of broccoli into the microwave for a minute and took it out bright green and beautiful....

So many things have changed in the cooking world, who has other things to remember?

Oh and beef driffing and vegemite samwiches... Oh Yum! and putting a piece of bread under the roast beef to soak up the juices and have with dinner

Now I eat veges or bowls of fruit and sometimes a sausage or two for lunch... sigh:(

Who changed the quality of food?

Yes I remember Mum using bi carb soda when cooking the peas also she would put a few leaves of mint in as well.   My sister and i would shell the peas for Mum I am sure that we ate more than went into the saucepan.

I also have memories of peeling small onions for Dad to pickle.  Our hands smelt like onions for days but the pickle onions were so good not like the ones we buy today.

The bi-carb soda was to keep the veges green. In the "olden days" they used to boil the life out of green veges until the turned a horrible grey colour.  The pinch of bi-carb kept them green.

To this day I still cook my beans on the stove with a pinch of bi-carb, although all the other greens go in the microwave..

Morning all 🙂

It's been years since I ate peas.  How strange is that.  I eat broccoli, cabbage, spinach, zuchinni... not never peas or beans.

Maybe I never really liked them, I don't know.  Yes even cabbage was boiled rotten and when you think it can be eaten raw and used instead of noodles in a stir fry, it is strange that we all accepted it as that limp grey sludge back then.

Hahaha!  Stir fries!  when did they begin?

Darkie, is the cancer thread still around somewhere, or has it slid away into the abyss? We thought my darling hubby had beat cancer, but it is back and he starts chemo in a week :_|

Little brother just reminded me of when Mother used to line us up and feed us each a spoon of Hypol.

Does anyone else remember the horrible fishy taste.

But at least it was better than Nan feed us a spoon of Cod Liver Oil.

The other Nanna used Caster Oil for what ever ailed you.

I also remember being given a spoon of Malt Extract that was yummy and i saw it in Woolies not so long ago.

Doll so good to see you here.  No the Cancer thread was trashed by a group here over the New Year Weekend when the moderators were away.

I would have started another one, but feel they would love to trash that too, so here we are and you are welcome to join us if you would like some support

What sort of cancer does he have and how are you both coping ?  I do hope all goes well for him xxxx
