The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

There is another thread going about students being criminally charged for wagging school.  Geez, if that law was in when I was about 9 or 10 they would have locked me up in the slammer  and thrown away the key.  I used to wag school in the tadpole season. Got the tadpoles from the local creek and sold them on weekends .. 3 for a penny (including a jar with holes in the lid). I can't remember how I handled a note from my mother to the school tho'.

Where have all the tadpoles gone?

Anyone remember autograph books?   I thought I posted that yesterday,, but apparently not.

Having trouble with my cleaning person again.  The replacement for the one who went to the mines, left last week to spend more time with her 2 year old.

A new one was supposed to come on Monday and didnt turn up. The agency had double booked her.

So ANOTHER new one came yesterday, managed to bugga up two vacuum cleaners and after about 20 mins said she had to go home cos she was REALLY nauseous  and she'd get them to send someone else??? have yet to hear from agency.

Yes Gilly...I  remember the autograph books.  I still have my mother's and I treasure it.

If you got your cleaner through an agency, they are responsible for any damage an employee causes.  They have insurance to cover this sort of thing.

'morning all.

At least Plane and other non-native deciduous trees only shed once a year. Australian natives (which I adore) shed all year round. Raking is a small price to pay for the beauty of trees when wall to wall concrete is not an option.

Darki, when I was a littlie, there used to be a Destroyer spanning the gap in the netting across Sydney Harbour and the Manly ferry could just squeeze through.  The kids used to line the side of lower deck and the Destroyer crew used to throw us lollies.

Can anyone remember the School Dentist?  A team used to regularly visit all government schools and give free dental treatment to the students.

AND freshwater... this was how the three japanese submarines managed to get into Sydney Harbour - by creeping through the nets under the Manly ferry 😮

Where there's a will there's way it seems 😞

Hahahaa  where I lived in Wollstonecraft there was, across the railway lines on the North Shore line between Wollstonecrat and Waverton some very huge gas tanks.. holders?  Anyway once one had crossed the lines in between trains, I would go tadpoling with my jars and spend my time leaning over the old tar pits that were filled in water and frogs and tadpoles.

The fun was if you walked across the tar pits you sank and it took some skill to walk at a rate that didn't allow you to sink too far.. Oh those were the days.

Used to sit by the railway lines on the white boxes that held the electrical wires and watch the train drivers pale as they saw us.  We had it down to a fine art and knew we were on the edge of being drawn in to the draught, but not quite.

It was over that time I discovered the little hideaways in the rail tunnels where works and small girls could step out of the way of trains as they raced through the tunnels...

Did I tell my mother?  NO WAY :^O

Yes I have my grandfather's autograph book with Donald Bradman's signature in it along with the team at that time.  My own, not half as interesting tho

Oh I don't envy you having to find a cleaning person again... my experiences with them sounds just like the trouble you are having at present... they are either sick or they faint or their kids are ill or or or.....

Hope you find one soon xx
