The Seniors Thread :-)

"This is for the Senior members of CS, those born before 1947. Baby Boomers and Generations X & Y are welcome providing you are over 18 🙂

But this is definitely for people who are facing the last long haul.  We have survived babyhood, childhood, being teens and twenties... We have learned to read and write, to drive, have probably been married and the women have survived child birth.

The challenges are constant and the near misses of death are also there.  If we have become a senior we have learned to survive so much, and along the way we have, of course, gathered a great deal of knowledge about life.

The  belief that age diminishes us is not true, it changes us and not all of it is bad.  Yes there can be various forms of dementia for some, but that is also a disease that can happen in younger people.  Alzheimer's can also occur - it is another form of dementia and generally occurs in people over 65, although that can occur much earlier too and not everyone is going to get it.

Most of us keep our mental alertness up to the moment of death, even if we lose our hearing and our eyesight, but of course this can happen at any age too.

What changes is our physical strength, which diminishes but our mental strength and patience grows, it has to of course, to deal with this aging thing.

Arthritis, heart trouble, strokes - all these things associated with age can happen at any time in your life - arthritis can happen when you are a child but they don't like giving out new hips and knees until you are in your 50s and 60s or later.  We can talk about that too.

Cancer can happen any time and that is also something we can discuss here if you like.

The point of this thread is to give the Seniors a chance to talk about how they are coping with age, the challenges it presents and the fears that can come with it... loss of hearing or sight, aging spouses, living alone, retirement villages, even death...

So I will ask that the Juniors treat us in kindly fashion and remember, all this is going to happen to you too - providing you avoid death before you get here 🙂

So, onward and upward.  Let's go...."

Thanks everyone. It has settled now. For a while there I was more hyper than our Jack Russell Terrier. My meds have been changed and that seems to have helped.  We only have one medical centre here to service a large region. All of the local doctors belong to it and it only opens between Mon = Friday 9am to 5pm. No weekends and you need to book to speak with your doc 7 days in advance. I rang the Health Direct medical service but after about 10 mins of yes, no questions, with I can't accept any other answer Madam, they concluded that I should see my GP within 4 hours. Uh! I told you at the start there is NO doctor. Reply, I can't suggest anything else. Don't think that I will bother them again. Oh to live in the city.

Jean, I had excessive HIGH BP and it turned out to be my cholesterol meds.. twice! I has some worrying weeks but now my BP has settled to a moderate high.... nothing like it was. Check your meds are not doing this as a side effect. All the best 🙂

Darki I was a bit worried about you, good to see you are okay. I sent you a message, did you get it?

Open houses are horrible... I had the last one just before we gave our keys back... now poor Buddy my sister has them coming through at all hours and she is not a well girl. Three times in one week last week... she is arriving any min and I want to hear how it all went.

I am a bit restless but too tired to unpack. Visitors at parents place from tonight but I am not unpacking to make it look nice for them... they can visit and help me if they wish but I just will not make myself any sicker than usual.

they have to take me as I am.... beani model No 1

Evening gerries.

Not sure what my blood pressure is.

Dr Google helps with most medical problems.

Have a mate who takes prescribed tablets for high blood pressure.

He went back to the doctor -and had lowered his count back to normal.

The Dr said they are working-he said no -i stopped taking them!.

That's a really serious situation jean, not good for people with ongoing issues.  Is there an ambulance service within reason?  there should be and if the Powers That Be have not allowed for your sort of situation, or things like severe asthma, chest pain and a whole list of other potential killers, then there is something seriously wrong.

On Bruny a medical centre as you have but we also had two ambulances who could be called 24/7.  If the situation was dangerous at night we would transport people down to the ferry terminal where a Police launch would pick them up and transport them to an ambulance in Hobart to go to hospital...

During the day, if it was serious a helicopter was called...

There must be something there for you.  I don't like the idea that you have high blood pressure and you can't get help easily, someone's head would roll if you died due to that system as it is at present, and I would hate it to be you who caused the beheading 😞

That is quite a low reading the an older person, which is why you were feeling dizzy

My OH gets reading like that and he has no history of high blood pressure.
