I had a sense of belonging, not because I was born here but because our culture was. Australians shouldn’t be oblivious to our heritage just because we have refined it and improved it and because we also honour the way it has been added to and deepened by the people of many other cultures who have been attracted to it.
Seem to be little if any recognition of the culture and the existence/value of people who were the inhabitants of this land.Just those who have been attracted to it .
I agree Martini

ok maybe its late, lack of food or I'm just plain dumb but can someone explain what the problem is?
Was it the term first Australians?
Coz we were settled as a convict settlement so technically he is correct but badly phrased and wrong for Adelaide as it was a free settlement.
what are the shocked faces all about?

A fact Not recognised for way too long .

Call it PC if you like but quite frankly it is Australia's history and the history of it's people....to deny that is imo idiodic
on 31-01-2013 10:32 PM
Tony himself said Australians shouldn't be oblivious to our History.
on 31-01-2013 10:41 PM
I am not denying Australian history. I live in a neighbourhood where the anglo Aussies are a minority - history not an issue with me and nor them. We are all living in the present and just getting on with our lives.
'quite frankly' FFS! :^O get off you high horse!
on 31-01-2013 10:48 PM
It's an old joke anyway. But those with an agenda will run with the PC issue as far as they can. As usual.

The first lot of Australians Tony Abbott was talking about in this reference are the first convicts... he is saying that those first people may have the convict tag but were good stock and thanking the judges.. many a person is proud to have convict ancestry and will boast about it..
Tony Abbot is a true advocate for the Aboriginal population. He wants them to be recognised as Australia's first people in the constitution... something that Gillard has put in the too hard basket.
from Wiki...
As Opposition spokesman on Indigenous Affairs, Abbott spent weeks teaching in a remote Aboriginal settlements in Cape York in 2008 and 2009, organised through prominent indigenous leaderNoel Pearson. He taught remedial reading to Aboriginal children; worked with an income management group, helping families manage their welfare payments; and visited children who had not been attending school—with a goal 'to familiarise himself with indigenous issues'.
Do yourself a favour and do a Google on the 'Books and Mortar' project at Cape York's Aurukun School in far north Queensland.
There is a lot more this man has done for our First People than Gillard has ever done so don't put him up as a person that does not care.
