Tony Abbott yet another successful overseas trip

PM Abbott is blowing away all the misconceptions and fantasy of the ALP/ABC/Faifax/Guardian/Laurie Oakes and the rest of the left wing chatterati and is representing Australia with absolute distinction. No one hates like the left and I'm sure the aforementioned will be working overtime to put a negative spin on Abbott's spectacularly successful overseas tour....

BARACK Obama’s advice to Tony Abbott after their first meeting in the White House this morning was to take a break and go surfing in Hawaii.

“You work too hard,” the US President told him after one of the highest level meetings in the oval office ever afforded an Australian Prime Minister.

When Mr Abbott told the President he had to stop by Honolulu to refuel on his way home, the President’s eyes lit up.

“You work too hard Tony,” the President said.

“You should try and get a surf in while you are there,” he said.

It had been standing room only in the Oval Office this morning when the two met at 11am Thursday.

Not only did the US President extend the planned one hour meeting with the PM, he had brought in six of his most senior Cabinet members and several advisors.

“It’s not unheard of, but it’s certainly not common,” one official said of the meeting.

Sources said that the meeting was one of the most high powered, afforded rarely to world leaders on visits to Washington.

The President described Australia as America’s best friend and a nation that “likes a fight”.

He praised the PM for restoring defence spending and offering a greater commitment to military partnership with the US.

That is so funny, just exactly what is "successful" about this jaunt? maybe the meal with his boss murdoch went well? just who are we at "war" with to justify such high spending on defence? the only war I see is the one abbott and his govt have declared on the poor.

International failure just like he is at home - a big F for fail.

Tony Abbott rebukes Barack Obama: don't resent China's rise

Abbott: ''For America to begrudge what the Chinese haven't achieved more than to admire what they have is out of character - especially as the movement, in just a generation, of hundreds of millions of Chinese into the middle class is a transformation unparalleled in human history,'' he said.

The unsolicited advice, bordering on a public rebuke, came in a speech to the American Chamber of Commerce overnight, in which the Prime Minister said it was only natural the US wanted to remain on top.

Climate change was also raised in the wide-ranging talks.

Perhaps tellingly, the topic was not raised in front of the cameras.

"There are some in the Abbott Government who think Mr Obama is one of the lamest of lame duck leaders, and is crippled by the Congress. "

Tony Abbott yet another successful overseas trip

Tony Abbott's language so far on his overseas tour betrays a complete lack of connection between what climate change is and what it might do, writes Jonathan Green.

So Barack, you might like to try this as an opening gambit: "Tony, there are no jobs on a dead planet." It might help break the ice, it might not. It's entirely possible that our PM might just blink uncomprehendingly at first mention, but as with any decent slogan, repetition is the key, so keep nagging away, again and again until you think the thing is so worn with use that it might fall apart at the softest touch. Then say it again.

...To suggest that the economy needs to be protected from the only policy path that might in the long term secure its very existence, is so close to absurd as to leave you wondering just whether in fact Abbott does accept any recognisable concept of climate change.

There is another possibility: that he does concede the menace of a warming world, but for the sake of effective short-term politics has elected not to act in its interests. It's hard to imagine any greater betrayal of national - human - interest.

It's a position that can be countered in just a few words: no jobs on a dead planet.

Which respected Australian (former Labor leader) in Washington has been accompanying Abbott to official functions in the US?

Kim Beazley has been kept in Washington because he is good at the job, and Tony Abbott knows it

....reports back from Abbott government ministers who had found Washington doors opening to them. They had feared they might have been firmly shut, but Kim Beazley seemed to have the keys.

Beazley quickly established he would serve Australia under an Abbott government as faithfully and effectively as he did under Labor administrations.
Further, he provides a link to the Democratic Party — via its relationship with Labor — which Mr Abbott could not guarantee from any Liberal or any professional diplomat who might have been sent to Washington.

Mr Abbott wasn’t slow in appreciating the Beazley advantages, and his decision to extend the ambassador’s term will not be challenged.

Tony Abbott extends former Labor leader Kim Beazley's term as Australian ambassador to Washington

But the at least 12-month extension of his appointment – the second since the Coalition came to power – also reflects another reality: that the Coalition has nobody comparable who can offer the kind of continuity and extensive contacts with the Democratic Party in Washington and particularly within the White House.

From link in op

On one side of the two three-seater couches adjacent to the President’s desk sat Mr Abbott, Ambassador Kim Beazley and the PM’s chief of staff Peta Credlin.

Ah, so Beazley is the key .

It's so very unlike the LNP not to turf anyone with any ALP connections out on their ear. wondered why Abbott wanted to keep him on, it makes sense now
