Turnbull rejects convention

Turnbull's only real option was bluff and bravado

Boldness is the currency of Canberra and confidence is a substitute for the control MPs will never have. Enter Malcolm Turnbull and the double dissolution gamble he "had to take". Chris Berg writes.

If Malcolm Turnbull is bluffing about a double dissolution election, it's a very committed bluff. A dramatic bluff. A bold bluff.

First, the Government had to pass the changes to the Senate. No point holding a double dissolution to clear out the Senate crossbench if that election would just throw up even more minor party crossbenchers. Lest the substance of this change be dismissed, consider that in order to hold a double dissolution which would result in the desired outcome, the Government had to change the voting system itself.

Mr Turnbull has rejected convention in this latest move. He is planning on introducing legislation to bring peace to the building industry BEFORE he has flown one of those very dangerous fact-finding-missions. What usually happens is that an MP, in this case Mr Turnbull,  in the company of a coterie of friends and supporters seeks out facts in the fact-rich locations of - wait for it - Paris, London, Vienna, New York, Rome and Brussels.

By forgoing the fact-finding-mission Mr Turnbull seems to be saying that these dangerous missions aren't needed at all.
