What you think about this? My granddaughter's leather school shoes fell to bits from walking home in the rain. Mum bought her a cheap pair of black canvas ones which was all she could afford that week.
Now here's the whinge I have. The school made her take them off, walk around bare foot and walk home from school with no shoes on!!:-(X-(
Does this constitute child abuse?? Psychological I mean.

it's all over now. just wanted some other opinions, which I certainly have got. don't think it's important enough to cause a HUGE fuss....was a bit worried that a high school teacher could do this sort of thing? glad to know it's not everyday behaviour. If it happens again, or something like it....don't worry....a complaint WILL be made.

Gill, I think people are agreeing with your concern .I suppose your daughter may feel kind of responsible as she bought the shoes ? Regardless of that what the teacher did was wrong and and in fact not compliant with the very reason the school actually has the shoe regulations actually exist. Not to mention totally degrading for your Granddaughter .I would encourage your DD to inform the principal (at the very least) so that this doesn't happen to other children at the school.

That really depends on different things such as: was it the first time the student wore inappropriate shoes? had she been given a warning? what type of shoes were they? could they have posed more danger ie no shoe laces, slippery? what was the student allowed to do during school hours without wearing shoes?
I think everyone was more surprised about walking home with no shoes.

mother has called the teacher involved... and she confirmed that the shoes were confiscated during school hours. .............Please read the whole thread?
Far out, that's extreme punishment for a minor offence.

I'm concerned that the teacher seemed to not act rationally
and acted out of spite .

YES IT DOES absolutely and completely... get her to report the school to the Department of Education...
it is demeaning and dangerous for the child to walk around without shoes in this day and age and it is irresponsible and disgraceful that the school picked on her this way.
It certainly isn't her fault. If they had an issue she should have rung her mother....
REPORT THEM!

thanks everybody.. will have a chat to DD but she's a bit like me....doesn't like confrontation...however I see what you all mean. will let you know what happens.

There doesn't have to be confrontation. A quiet chat to find out details re what she wore during the school hours is all it has to be. I would be going to find out about that bit at least. Some form of shoe is better than no shoe.

As far as I know (for public schools anyway) as long as the shoes are black and covered over it shouldn't matter if they're leather or not...
Plenty of kids I see around in school uniform are wearing cheap canvas shoes, some are the kind with laces some are just the slip on kind that don't even cover the whole foot
I would be complaining, the walking home barefoot issue is not so bad but having to walk around all day in no shoes is not on

I am not so worried about the shoes and other uniform problems but what the hell is that teacher doing to the children?
abuse or bullying? I don't know but I wouldn't that teacher anywhere near that child again.
I know what you mean about not wanting to make things difficult for your GD by complaining but it is only March and that teacher will have your GD for another 8 months or so.
