I was going to title this topic COVID vaccination rates and opening up at 80% (by the numbers) . . . but went with the one suggested by countess on another thread.
Please note that I am not starting this thread for the discussion of COVID vaccination, making vaccination mandatory or the pros/cons of vaccination.
This thread is also not for posting about 'early stage treatments' for COVID. I may well report any such posts for being off-topic if they are made.
I won't be posting arguments for or against vaccination, just the numbers and percentages that will drive the easing of restrictions.
The intention of this thread is to provide an analysis of the figures that I haven't been able to find elsewhere. It is for me to post screengrabs of an Excel spreadsheet that shows the double dose percentages that will become crucial in opening up the country.
I will prepare a spoiler so that members can see how the spreadsheet numbers are calculated. The spoiler will also note the source I use for spreadsheet preparation.
If anyone notices any errors in my calculations or screengrabs then please let me know.

Thank you for continuing this info.
I have been kicking myself as a couple of days back, I looked up a statistic chart to show hospital/ICU/death numbers as they relate to vaccination status of the patients.
I was delighted to find a much more up to date chart for Vic (the previous one I had recorded stopped at about mid Jan this year).
But I had to go out for a while and decided to do a screenshot later that day when I wasn't in a rush. That night it was gone.
The reason I wanted it was I had 2 people tell me they saw a report on the news that the great majority of those dying of covid are unvaccinated. That is completely untrue. I am not an anti vaxxer at all. I have my vaccinations and boosters up to date. All I am interested in is the truth.
With one person who told me, I thought she may have misunderstood the message and the government reporter may have said simply the unvaccinated were over represented. But with the other person saying she heard the same thing, and I know she is reliable, I am inclined to believe what they heard.
The truth as I see it is that with delta, the vaccination was extremely effective. In the week up to 1st Jan, 100% of those dying were unvaccinated, at a time when the majority of over 16s in Vic were vaccinated.
In the weeks before that, the rate of vaccinated dying was always low eg 8%, so 0% wasn't an aberration.
However, as omicron took hold, the % of vaccinated dying went up. The unvaccinated were still very much over represented though.
The last stats I saw (but didn't get screenshot) showed about 75% (I think) of those dying in Vic were vaccinated. This means the unvaccinated are still very much over represented because they comprise only about 4% of the over 16 population. But 75% means the majority of those dying are in fact vaccinated and if the government says otherwise it is lying.
Here are the recent NSW stats. I would imagine we are similar but the Vic chart was much better. I wish we still had access to it. From the stats the impression I am getting is that not every hospital knows the vaccination status of their patients but if someone dies, they must make sure to find out.

springyzone, this might be of interest to you.
On 17th July, SA Health reported that there wre 288 people with COVID-19 in hospital, including 10 people in ICU. Of those hospitalised, 163 people had received three or more vaccine doses, 73 people were either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 52 had an unknown vaccination status.
For 18th July (latest reporting period), there were 306 people with COVID-19 in hospital, including 11 people in ICU. Of those hospitalised, 171 people had received three or more vaccine doses, 75 people were either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 60 had an unknown vaccination status.
That is... roughly 55.88% of the patients that require hospital treatment are fully vaccinated. Considering that 74.6% of those eligible in SA have three or more vaccine doses (meeting the definition of "fully vaccinated"), that means the substantially greater proportion of people ending up in hospital are not fully vaccinated.
If people refuse to get their third dose, thinking "I've had two doses, I'm fully vaccinated", they are completely wrong. Their protection has long since waned. The definition of "fully vaccinated" for people over 50 is now FOUR doses... and even for those 30 and over, three doses are considered necessary/recommended, with 4 doses welcome.
What we need to look at is not the raw number of people being hospitalised/dying according to vaccination status, not yet the percentage of people being hospitalised/dying according to vaccination status. Rather, it's the proportion of those being hospitalised/dying in terms of their representation in the population according to vaccination status. That paints a clear picture.
68.5% of those eligible in NSW for a third dose have had that dose. That leave 31.5% who should have had that dose having eschewed getting it - i.e., they're not fully vaccinated. Every single one of the people who died with COVID-19 in NSW over the epidemiological week ending 9th July (95 deaths) was eligible for the third dose. Only 65% of them had received their third dose. The majority of these people were at high risk of a morbid outcome; you'd think that these would be exactly the people rushing to be as vaccinated as possible.
For those vulnerable people, being fully vaccinated is a risk mitigation (sadly not a complete eradication of risk). For a lot of them, there isn't much else they can do. Their visitors may not be fully vaccinated... probably aren't masked any more... Hand hygiene has gone to hell in a handbasket... No one's maintaining social distancing when visiting loved ones (or hardly anyone).
It's just a sad truth that the majority of being dying are going to be people aged over 65, and the immunocompromised. Even with full vaccination, they still have a measurable risk of dying if they become infected with COVID-19. Full vaccination reduces the risk, and now that antivirals are able to be prescribed more readily, the risk will further reduce.
Anyway, there we are. The unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated are well and truly over-represented in hospitals and deaths, but with the sheer numbers of infections, the number (not proportionally, but the raw number) of fully vaccinated people ending up in hospital and ending up dying will be higher.
Once we get variant-specific vaccines (the Omicron ones being likely to be released later this year), we might see an even better immune response among the people most at risk, but the best thing we can do to protect each other is to be fully vaccinated... not partially, not "fully vaccinated according to what ATAGI said last year", but fully vaccinated as defined now. (And to follow all of the other measures that protect us. I'm still wearing P2s out in public, taking off the mask only when I'm outside in a gathering where I'm required to speak and can keep people at a distance, or outside / separate in restaurant eating with people who are part of my household OR have tested negative fifteen minutes earlier... and NO HUGGING.)
