I recently stumbled across WORDLE online. For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:
Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though). Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words. I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts. Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

There were two other possibilities in the end, I guessed correctly, could easily have missed this one.
I seem to be stuck on getting Lewdle in 3!

After my first try, I had 3 choices for the last letter. To think I was sooooo close to getting it in one!

The collective Wordle skills here are impressive, I agree!

By the end of the second guess, the word was unmistakable. 3 seems to be my standard number of guesses, mostly.

I am mostly impressed by how all of you can show the little coloured squares without revealing the letters.
I am not sure how to do that.
I was momentarily stumped this morning.
I had a guess that showed all of the final 4 letters correct and in their right spot. The first letter though was marked as correct letter but in the wrong spot. Where else could it go?
Then I realised it was just very literal and that was its way of telling me the letter was not used twice. ie not that letter, and after that it was easy.😁

I’m hooked on this game. I actually started this last night after work, but fell asleep trying to sort it out at line 2. 😂😂😂😂😂
Went back to it this morning thinking it would have disappeared, it it didn’t, so that was good.
Im happy with 3 guesses.
I always start with the same word 😉
@springy, if you click on *share* once you’ve completed your Wordle, it will copy it to the clipboard, then when I come here, I just click to *paste* and it does.
I’m on iPad and the eBay app though. 😘

I mentioned that I'm also playing ABSURDLE.
ABSURDLE is based on the same principles as WORDLE, but it's sneakier. The game doesn't start off having chosen a word; it only gives the impression that it has.
Instead, (behind the scenes) when you've input your first guess, the game sorts out different groups or "buckets" of words that would correspond as a result of your guess. It has a word list of 2,315 possible secret words / answers, and it chooses the "bucket" of words with the highest number of possible answers to your guess.
None of that is visible to you, the player. You make your first guess, and let's say that the result is all black (no right letters). The game has chosen the bucket of words that offers you the biggest challenge - the most possible words.
You make your second guess. Let's say that you get 1 or 2 letters "yellow" (correct letters but not correct spot). You'll ONLY get that response if ABSURDLE's inner machinery has worked out that it still has the edge on you - that giving you one or two "right" letters is from its biggest "bucket" of words (largest number of possibilities) with the possibilities having been whittled down as a result of your guess.
And so on, until YOU have pushed the game into a cul de sac where there is only one possible word choice.
In other words, it's being extremely sneaky.
If you always start off with the same starter word, you'll always get the same result. (The algorithm doesn't change; only your behaviour does.) So... if you use exactly the same word guesses each step of the way, you'll always get the same final answer. It's up to you to play the game differently each time, in order to get a different path and a different result.
I want to stress that you play it EXACTLY as you play WORDLE, and it looks the same. It's just the inside workings are driven by your choices.

I couldn't believe the result of my second guess. Those 5 letters could only spell two other words, one of which was eliminated due to the letter results of my first guess.
