WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

So nearly a 6… so nearly!

But no - it’s another 7.

This Octordle was easy enough… I’d have liked it to be a little more interesting. As it was, once I played my 2nd row eliminator, it was minimally challenging.

Note: US spelling present.

I am just seeing this post this morning and have a smile. I was at my daughter's yesterday and I did do wordle and octordle but on the phone and it does my head in trying to remember how to log into ebay and post etc so I just didn't.

But the exact same thought went through my head when I did octordle-I thought, I wish I could warn countess  about the US spelling. 😁

Not that I need to warn you as you always do well anyway!

Yesterday I took 4 for wordle. I think I went alien/shout/crypt and papal was what came to mind next when I looked at what I had.

I was pleased with my octordle as I got 56. I am not sure how as I wasn't worried too much about it as I knew it was not getting posted. Wasn't watching how many turns etc but thought I had had a lot & that would push the score out. Can't recall the answers but I think they were bland enough. Then I saw 56 and thought-dang, a better score than usual and I can't post it. Isn't it always the way!😂

I haven't done it today.

I have done wordle. That was a pain, hardly anything to go on and luckily for me, the answer was the first thing I thought of with what was left, but there was another possible answer, one at least.

It was easy enough, it is just I didn't feel ready to guess till turn 4 and then I made a mistake on turn 5. It was helpful with other words though.

smock instead of scoff. I was pretty sure it was scoff after I made the mistake but went with the other 'sure things' first.

I knew the 3-row solutions would run into a hiccup sooner or later.

My starter - TRACE- gave me blanks. I followed with an eliminator BOUGH.

Oh, this was full of traps.

I used CATER as my starter for a bit of a change, and SPOIL was my 2nd row eliminator.

Once I had the green, there weren't that many other letters that could go in first place, so that helped.

Not my finest hour but I got there.

In hindsight, I would have been better off to just use the first 3 words as letter eliminators.

Some traps.

It was obvious that the yellow from my starter must be in one of two positions. I used an eliminator designed to rule in or out that position, and further to rule in or out certain likely letters.

Spoiler
TRACE
CHOPS
CHAOS

C would be either the first or second letter. If 2nd, S would very likely be the 1st letter. Last 2 letters might be MP or LP. If C were 1st, 2nd letter might be H or L or O (possibly Y but not likely enough to put high on my mental list) and last letters might SP or MP or SM and so on. All in all, I decided on CHOPS as my 2nd row eliminator.

It told me everything I needed.

I started with CATER and had a few greens, but not enough to guess anything. The letters being what they were, I focused on specific letters with my eliminator.

As I began solving, one or two words whose shape I could see were left until I had more information: this paid off especially with solving 2R before tackling 2L and 3L.

I also avoided a misstep by having ruled out my eliminator’s first letter and 4th letter for 1L, which meant that 1L had only one possible 3rd letter.

CATER - my starter.
PHONY - my 2nd row eliminator.

4L was _AT_N -> It might be Satan, Latin, matin, but I considered SATIN the most likely.

Once I had that, 4R was obvious, and 3R followed suit.

1R was __E_N (with a yellow A that couldn’t be 2nd), which I decided was almost certainly __EAN. Looking at my remaining unplayed letters, 2nd letter probably L, which meant … GLEAN.

1L … I had T, C, O, I, no P or N allowed, C couldn’t be the 1st letter, I was in 4th position, T couldn’t be 2nd or 3rd. Obviously it must be TOXIC.

2R… I had all yellows, TLEA. Given where each letter couldn’t be, I was reasonably sure that the shape was EALT, which meant hello, D, for DEALT.

With the D in play, the final two words were obvious.

I went for a guess at row 2, but it was close enough to narrow down the RH word to 2 possibilities. I used row 3 to try a guess for LH word and to rule in or out one of the two letter possibilities for the RH.
