WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

This was probably the smoothest in a while. It would be great to break the 52 barrier but I don't think I could have solved it without my first 2 eliminators.

Spoiler

No real challenges where I had several alternatives to choose from.
I had initially thought #2 might be torch, but I went for the certainties first and by the time I got back to it, R had been ruled out.
I was waiting for a while for #8, in the hope  the first letter would sort itself out, and luckily for me, it did.

Well, well, well, isn't this a walk down memory lane.

It proves the old saying-nothing new under the sun.

On turn 3, it was either cheat or wheat & I decided to go with cheat.
That ruled out cuter for #8. I suppose it could have been something like utter, but I had this strong feeling that yes, they certainly would do it to us-use a wordle answer in octordle.

Wordle 1,588 3/6

🟨🟩

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

I had 15 possibilities after the starter. It would have been nice to come up with an eliminator that would definitely serve up the answer… but the best I could do was definitely drill down on 7 words, with 2 groups of 2 possible words and 1 group of 4 possible words.

🟨🟩 UNMEW <- eliminator

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 TUBER 🎯

The possible words before eliminator were tenor, tiger, timer, titer (irritating US spelling), tiler, toner, tower, tuber, tuner, tired, threw, their, terry, twerk, twerp.

Using unmew:

tenor = _y_y_

tiger = ___g_ (*1 of 4)

timer = __gg_

titer = ___g_ (*2 of 4)

tiler = ___g_ (*3 of 4)

toner = _y_g_

tower = _y_gg

tuber = y__g_

tuner = yy_g_

tired = ___g_ (*4 of 4)

threw = ___gg

their = ___y_ (**1 of 2)

terry = ___y_ (**2 of 2)

twerk = ___yy (***1 of 2)

twerp = ___yy (***2 of 2)

I think that’s the best I can do.

As it was, the eliminator did reveal y__g_ (tuber).

OMG countess, I am impressed by your analysis of your wordle possibilities.

I usually try to figure out a couple of possibilities to see if there are any letters in common coming up, but I don't usually factor in every possibility, I have to admit. Often I don't even think of the answer till the end.

Today was *not* a stirling day for me.

I seriously considered not using shout as my second turn, as I felt sure there would be no more vowels.

But then I thought okay, it could be words like cream or dream, but then again, it could be something like shake or share or stare or stage (and a range of other words) so I might as well go with the usual.

I was surprised to see a U pop up, put it that way.

Third try was quake, as I thought that sounded likely.

After that, I thought it was probably between gauze and gauge (there may have been other possibilities, I have no idea), but I fancied gauze, which was another wrong fancy. Today was full of them.😂

Extremely annoyed at myself with this one.

I made a mistake that was entirely avoidable, because I just overlooked including a letter I had already exposed in the word.

Spoiler
25 cl.pngIt started well, I felt quite pleased to get an answer on turn 2.
But for turn 3, I used shout.
That helped solve a couple but for #7 & 8, I had to hold off as too many possibilities.
I was thinking store, stove,stoke, smote for #7.
Then for some reason, further down, once the K was exposed, I jumped on it and thought, has to be smoke. Completely forgot the T for some reason. Too hasty.

Then at the end, was #5 going to be local or vocal and was #8 batch or watch.
I tried to come up with an eliminator to cover v, w, b but couldn't think of one.
In the end, I figured vibes would do the same job.

At least I was consistent with my scores today.😂

And at least I didn't make any outrageous mistakes this time.

I had the same dilemma at the end though.

Spoiler

At the end, I was thinking #2, waxen or waken and #3, mower or mover.
I considered using an eliminator but then thought- if I try to solve #2 straight off, I will have a 50/50 chance plus it will also expose if there is a W in #3.
This time, I fancied waxen slightly more so I went with it and I was in luck.

I don’t always put that same level of word-drilling into my workings, though! If the number of possible words is more than 40, it’s impractical, so I then focus on possible patterns. I have my favourite eliminators which can often be relied on to give a decent result, but I try to tailor my eliminator to the possible outcomes that march across the landscape like little soldiers.

This time the possibilities were too numerous to list, so I whipped through the basic patterns and noted the letters most likely to come up.

🟩🟩 MAULS <- eliminator

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 GAUGE 🎯

L was a letter whose presence or absence I wanted to confirm; ditto with M and S. Also helpful: G, B, V. But it would be helpful to nail down the position of A (confirm/deny 2nd position), and if I had only one other vowel, I’d prefer U to either I or O. I settled on mauls as the eliminator, and calculated I’d guess the answer in no more than 4 tries, and quite possibly within 3.

After the eliminator, it was obviously gauge or gauze.

3R (angle) stared me in the face. 3L (vocal) was down to 2 possible words as the L from lingo ruled out local, and 2L was a 1 in 3… I went with gut feeling.

The next three were straightforward… but then came the batch/catch/hatch/match/watch dilemma. It seemed best to use an eliminator; I couldn’t rule out catch or hatch but I hoped that it would be one of the other three. Womby covered the necessary letters, and luckily the B settled it.
