WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

This wasn’t tricky. I avoided trying to solve one word too early, and all was fine.

It started easily enough with 1L and 1R, but then left 2L for a while as it could be either smash or swash3R and 4L were unambiguous…

4R had yellow B, U and L. A bit of thinking gave me the only possible answer: plumb.

This gave me filmy at 3L

Now that I had the M ruled out for 2L, I could play swash.

The final word at 2R was FO__Y - it had to be foggy.

That final word was a 1 in 3. I chose an eliminator to get things sorted out.

Clear, simple - until I was facing 2L for the final word. The pattern was _A_OR. It could be major, favor (US spelling), razor. I didn’t have a good feeling about it - so employed an eliminator.

It was a good decision. I would not have played razor.

I had a strong gut feeling immediately for LABOR. It would have been strategically better to use MAYOR but I went with my gut.

Had I tried mayor, it actually wouldn’t have made any difference, interestingly.  I’d still have ended up with only one possible answer.

I found this quite tricky. The eliminator was not quite right for this Octordle, and I’ll admit that I felt like grabbing another eliminator halfway through.

Medic and motif were all well and good. I hurled myself at dizzy without letting myself calculate the odds - pure gut instinct.

Welk, the D at the start at least helped with 2R; I knew now that it wasn’t DRA_E, but rather _RADE - which could only be grade.

That still didn’t help. This was when I thought I might be forced into another eliminator… but then I focused on 2L. I had only yellows - T, E, N. The possible placement of those letters actually gave me only one possible solution: knelt.

With 1L, I simply had to guess. I was influenced by my hearty desire to see S in play for the remaining words, although I also wanted to rule P out or in… and what an irony that proved to be.

3R presented yet another guess situation. Yes, P was the sticking point! I gave in and tried strap.

That effectively dealt with the final word as well. Before strap, 4R could have been harry, harpy, parry. After it - only one possibility.

WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I did yesterday's but forgot to post them later.

With wordle, I took 4.

alien/shout

That gave me green A in line 1. Yellow  H & O in line 2.

I didn't have a clue what it could be, the only word I could remotely think of was achoo, which seemed unlikely.

Third line I tried pricy and revealed a yellow R. The penny finally dropped. Abhor.

By the way, you used a great eliminator in one of the games, fremd. I have never heard of that, must remember it. Covers a lot of good letters.

Yesterday's octordles.

Well, I can't believe this! I did them yesterday morning and I had to go out, but I could have sworn I saved them. Now They are not showing as saved recently.

On one of them (and I forget which) I scored 52, on the other I used another eliminator along the way and score either 59 or 60, around that.

I do have today's.

1 cl.jpgThis was reasonably straightforward.
I did hesitate slightly on turn 3, over melon or felon, but melon was the first word I thought of and I am sure it has been out a few times before. Plus #4 was looking like count or mount or perhaps fount but I fancied the first two more. So... m was useful. It actually proved a lot more useful than I had expected.

The extreme.

1 ex.jpgAgain, I started with what i thought of as a 50/50 guess (rhino or chino) but rhino seemed more likely. As soon as I finished line 3 though, I looked at #4 and thought-idiot! That one is 100% obvious and should have been done before #5.
After that, I was a at a bit of a loss and debated whether to use fudgy or something else. I had already uncovered P & R  so pricy was out as a choice. I went with comfy. I probably should have just used fudgy as later I was faced with gross or dross. I chose dross as it appealed to me as maybe more likely in the extreme game. But who knows!
All in all, probably lucky to come out of it with 58.
