I recently stumbled across WORDLE online. For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:
Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though). Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words. I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts. Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

It could have been sloop or slosh.
We’ve had slosh appear very recently, so I was hopeful it would be less likely on this occasion.

1L could have been brute, write: worth the risk. 3L - only one possible word.
4R - party or ratty. At this point I thought it best to play an eliminator. Pugil would rule the P out or in, and also give me the remaining vowels and two consonants that I was keen to determine for the rest of this Octordle.
The rest was solvable from that point, save for 1R which could have been goody had I not solved 4L beforehand.

After smoky, I knew I’d have to guess my way through the final word unless it turned out to be patch. Graph ruled that out - but that was small comfort. It would still be a 1 in 4 guess - or an eliminator. The only truly effective eliminator would be howbe:
batch = y__y_
catch = y____
hatch = g____
watch = y_y__
Aggghh… let’s just risk a guess! said my inner risk-taker. In other words, I went with my gut feeling.

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩SpoilerHonestly, what a day.
I tried to be strategic in wordle with my eliminator, only to find I was in pretty much the same position I would have been if I just went ahead and used my usual (or scout, as I was tempted to).
I figured after my first turn it had to be sling/slink, bling/blink, cling/clink, fling/flint, glint.
Maybe I missed some others, I don't know.
Logic would say g & k needed to be sorted.
Anyway, I went with stick for turn 2.
flint or glint? I wavered. I sort of fancied glint but thought flint would be safer. It was 50/50.
Yes… I would probably have made sure to eliminate G, but hindsight is a great “should’ve”iser!

Score: 61Exceedingly annoyed with myself on this one.
Spoiler
After my first 2 turns, there wasn't any spot I could see that was a sure thing.
#1 stalk/stall/salty
#2 purer, ruder, rupee
#3 basic, basis
#4 lumpy, lucky
#5 plaid, flair, blair (unlikely)
#6 greed, breed, freed, freer
#7 blame, blade, place, glade
#8 beast, feast, yeast (we have seen this dilemma out many times before)
So.. I decided to use pricy as eliminator but for some reason wrote price instead.🙄
It reminds me of the day I wrote shale instead of shout.
I suppose it wasn't all bad, it helped sort out #2 as I would have gone for purer otherwise.
Oh no… that was very unlucky. Those letters were simply not running in your favour - but at least the E for Y slip wasn’t as detrimental as it could have been.

It still makes me laugh when I pull up the wordle site so I can post results and it shows me the tab to 'admire results'.😂
SpoilerAnnoy, more likely!
The first word to pop into my head after turn 2 was spool. But I thought, come on, don't be impetuous, give it a bit of thought.
And I thought of scowl.
So that's how I scored 4 instead of 3.😂
Sometimes the impetuous approach works! (But admittedly … it often doesn’t.)

I found this one slow going.
SpoilerThings started well with 2 easy solves, then I thought, okay, onwards and upwards, which spot shall I do next?
And I was deafened by the silence. Looking back at it, #4 was probably solvable at that point but I could not think what it could be, as my first thought had been basal but that was obviously out.
So.. I used pricy as eliminator and that cast a bit of light on proceedings.
I see ratty has made a return. It was always just a matter of time. Mind you, I was tempted by warty for a while. They like that one too.
Yes, #4 had only one possible solution at that point because of the ruled-out 2nd place letters and the ruled-out first place S. But it’s interesting how easily the mind doesn’t readily think of the initial letter combination…

This one was a bit more straight forward, although the ending wa sa bit of a nightmare. I was lucky to get out of it without taking more of a hit.
SpoilerAt the end, #5 could have been batch, catch, hatch or watch. Thank goodness match and patch were off the board. But.. only 3 turns left and 4 possibilities. Of them all, I fancied watch, but....
Ideally, I needed an eliminator that covered w & b, but which itself started with either c or h.
I could not think of a single thing. Where is countess, I thought. She'd know one for sure.
But I went with bewig, which left catch and hatch, so I just went with catch as something had to go first.
Snap! Same dilemma! And yes, I had an eliminator ideal for the job…
