I recently stumbled across WORDLE online. For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:
Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though). Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words. I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts. Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

I was pretty sure of the bottom left word by row 3, and the eliminator word confirmed it, I held off playing that bottom left word, though, to solve the other words. In particular, top right was proving elusive, and I wanted more letters to illuminate its possibilities.
However, even after solving bottom right and top left, I had no further letters uncovered for top right, which in itself was a valuable bit of information. I played the word that was most likely, and it was correct.

Oh, yes - the old “use the letter twice” trick.
I had to take a stab at the bottom left block, because all I had was an I and a Y. That gave me the knowledge of which letter was the first for top right block, and where an important letter was for top left. (And thus I was able to work out top left. New word for Octordle.)
One word reminded me of how long it’s been since I reread a bit of Chaucer.
Another word reminded me of an old-fashioned American papa scolding his daughter.

This nearly defeated me. There were a lot of possibilities so on turn 5, I had to use a word to eliminate a few of them. It's not a hard word as such.

Ha! Really had the extremes today. Got the RH word in one but that left hand word-not a hard word but unfortunately the letters I had meant I could make about a dozen different words. On my second last turn, I tried an eliminator just to narrow it down but even then, there were a couple of possibilities and I had to choose.

Not so good on this, I needed one more turn.
I wasted some turns on possibles that didn't work out.
I have to say, that first word is rather contrived, in my opinion. The rest are pretty straight forward.

Wordle was indeed tricky.

I’ll post my sequence to show what I had to do.
TRACE
HUMPY
—— and of course by the second row, the problem was limited to the first letter. But so many possibles! I was faced with having to choose between L, W, N, B, C, as the obvious ones. (Others had been eliminated.) Therefore I played…
CHAWL
—— as a word that would narrow it down. I thought N was the least likely, and if CHAWL didn’t reveal the first letter, I’d know it must be either B or N, so I’d play the B.
I had the answer after row 3… but had I not used the eliminator word, I’d have been scrambling for the answer and probably failing.

Wow! I certainly didn’t have your good fortune with the right word, but I steadily worked through the puzzle. As soon as I knew that a particular letter wasn’t the final letter of the left word, I had it.

I agree about the word’s usage. I’d use it more in a specialist sense (as a mountaineer - if I didn’t want to use “étrier”), I suppose.

I thought I might manage to get this in 10, but darn it - I needed a row 10 eliminator!
