WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

Yet another 7. But you’re right, springyzone; this had freshness. I particularly like the whole thing ending in such a friendly spirit.

My starter was TRACE, and SPOIL was my 2nd row eliminator. I had to play a 2nd eliminator - DUNGY - to begin solving.

I still do Wordle on most days.

For today's, I got nothing from my first two efforts, then POW, got the answer on my third guess.  No help other than looking at unused letters on the keyboard and looking for a word that used unused vowels.  I nearly fell over when it lit up green.

You know, straight after my second guess, the first word that came into my mind proved to be the answer.

But I wasn't quite game to be like K1000 and go for it as on reflection, I realised there were at least 4 possibilities. The third eliminator word helped but it was still not a sure thing.

Spoiler
I had A, S & T
My first thought was stark.
But my second thought was strap, or stack or straw or stamp. Or even stars but that was always an outsider, given we know Bot detests plurals.😂

I didn't make any stupid mistakes, at least. I did make a mistake

Spoiler
blade instead of glade

but at least it was a possible word, not an impossible guess.

I just didn't get inspired early on with answers. 😁

The bot was revoltingly full of approval. I’d played such an excellent opener, and exactly the eliminator it would have played …

I cant say that this was a pleasure to solve. It felt “off”.

I used TRACE as my starter, with GHOUL to follow.

PUNCH 6️⃣5️⃣ ANNUL
GIDDY 7️⃣3️⃣ OCTAL
UNZIP 8️⃣9️⃣ ALIKE
GLADE 4️⃣🔟 FREER
Score: 52

OCTAL was easy to solve; it was the only possible anagram.

GLADE - it could have been GLAZE and I did nearly try that.

ANNUL - I couldn’t see any other possibility.

PUNCH - It might have been LUNCH, HUNCH, MUNCH, BUNCH. The only reason I tried P is because of 3L; I wanted to rule P in or out as I was already thinking it would fit after N. But this was too much a matter of luck.

GIDDY - it did seem the only possibility. No other vowels - no N before the D - there must surely be a Y on the end.

UNZIP - again a bit of luck. It might have been UNPIN.

ALIKE - could have been ALIVE. I don’t know why I chose K and that is unsettling.

FREER - annoying. It’s just an annoying word with two sets of doubly-used letters, and it may be the major reason why I wasn’t satisfied with this Octordle.

I had a really, really bad start to this one, as you can see.

After 2 turns, I only had one vowel, so I figured that it probably featured twice in the word. The 3rd word was a guess that at least tried out 3 new consonants and ended up almost solving it for me.

Today’s Wordle is dedicated to Ichabod’s meow, which he so likes to practise at my bedroom door during the night.

TRACE as starter. This lent itself immediately to a particular sort of eliminator, and I was able to narrow it down after that to less than a handful of probable answers.

Spoiler
TRACE <- With R as 2nd letter, I wanted hard consonants ruled in or out. So…

TRACE <- R was in (green)
BINGO <- G & O were in (yellows)
GROOM

It could have been GROUP or GROWL or GROSS  or GROWS. I threw out GROWS as the Wordless machinery doesn’t like plurals. I decided on GROOM as Wordle especially like double vowels, but it was a 1 in 4 guess admittedly.
